About the Author
Mary E. Marshall is an entrepreneur who has spent her career making small businesses into successful ventures. She has done this both as a CEO and business owner herself, and as an executive coach and consultant. Mary has also worked with Vistage International as a peer coach to CEOs and business executives. While at Vistage, Mary was awarded the Rookie of the Year, Chair Excellence, and Star awards, and received the Master Chair designation. She was consistently ranked among the top Vistage Chairs in the country and was the first woman in Vistage history to hold the #1 Chair ranking for the U.S. In 2012 Mary left corporate life at Vistage to go back to what she loves best: working directly with entrepreneurs to help them achieve their dreams. She launched Marshall Advisors, LLC as an Executive Advisory agency to work with CEOs and their executive teams to help them achieve their goals more quickly and efficiently, and to have some fun while doing it! In addition to her work with business entrepreneurs, Mary also shares her expertise with Social Venture Partners and teaches a class for entrepreneurs at The Small Business Administration. In January of 2014 she was nominated by the SBA as a candidate for the 2014 SBA Small Business Awards Competition, Minority Small Business Champion category.

Mary E. Marshall speaks with the authority she has learned and earned. She is a dynamic thinker and writer and what she has accomplished in this book is what every person in business dreams - a path to success, whether from the CEO chair of a huge corporation who wants to stay on top and ahead of the game, or those many minds searching for a recipe for starting a small business and seeing it actually succeed. Mary's credentials speak clearly: she is herself an entrepreneur who has spent her career making small businesses into successful ventures, both as a CEO and business owner herself, and as an executive coach and consultant. To review a book of the importance and magnitude of PUTTING TOGETHER THE ENTREPRENEURIAL PUZZLE it is tempting to summarize Mary's secrets: that would in many ways defeat the purpose of this book - a volume that depends on reading the complete tome in the sequence she has written it as each section builds to the next one and in many ways is the way to follow the leader in piecing together the pieces of this puzzle. Mary introduces her topic with some heady facts about the atmosphere of business today - the growing proliferation of small businesses that are producing the resource for employment and output in a time when the mega corporations are suspect in their management and approach to the public.
What Mary accomplishes in this book is to teach us to think from the bottom up - with an emphasis on the goal and end product to help us avoid the inevitable pitfalls of the road to entrepreneurial success. `My wish for you as you apply what you learn in this book is that you develop productive employees who are aligned with your vision and values, that you attract happy customers, and that you make lots of money and have a lot of fun along the way.' The amount of useful information within each of these `piece' is staggeringly helpful. An entrepreneurial game changer - you'll want to keep this one handy.

Mary Marshall's book, Putting Together the Entrepreneurial Puzzle, couldn't be more perfectly timed. The strength of our economy will depend on the growth in new ventures and we need people with the bravery to go out on their own and start these new companies. Now that brave group has a handbook. The wealth of knowledge contained in this book is unbelievable. To be honest, I wish I had had this book while I was working on my Bachelor's degree. It truly is the blueprint for creating your own company and getting it started off on the best foot possible. According to Bloomberg 8 out of 10 businesses fail within the first 18 months. That's a startling number. With the tools provided within this book I hope we can empower the young minds setting out to create new businesses to have the tools necessary to ensure their success.
Within our post-recessionary economy there is a growing understanding that the biggest players in our economy moving forward will be the small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures. It is unlikely that we will see large job growth within established large companies they are simply too big already and if anything will be downsizing as companies continue to find new ways to build efficiencies and automation. However, there is light at the end of our tunnel as the market demands are shifting toward smaller businesses; local vs. foreign, mom-and-pop vs. corporation, etc. Meanwhile the market is making it known that we want to talk to a person not a computer, we want to be able to walk in to the store and hold your product in our hands before we buy, and we want our money to benefit our neighbor not someone across the country or outside of the country. We must also not forget that entrepreneurship is the epitome of the American dream and the American way. It's what we do. It's what we will continue to do which is good because our economic survival as a global power will depend on it. This is not meant to be a post of pre-apocalyptic propaganda, it's the blunt truth. Alas there is hope, I have read recent reports that 1 in 3 Gen Yers have "owner" listed as their job title on their resume whether it is a side venture or their primary job and source of income. Us millennials are very entrepreneurial and it seems most of us have a dream of one day working for a start-up.
What I appreciate most about Mary's book is that as clich� as it sounds, I truly feel almost anyone can benefit from reading this book especially in the business world. It is applicable to any business out there and offers a macro perspective on how businesses operate and how all of the moving pieces fit together to form the complete enterprise. I gained so much insight and walked away with actionable items that I can bring to life at my current job. The advice I gained applies to almost everyone and was a good reminder that we need to take ownership of our piece of the puzzle and realize the big picture. If I have been vague, it was intentional. I don't want to spoil the content of this book for anyone who gets their hands on a copy. I'm not sure I could successfully convey the richness of this book or do this book justice trying to summarize Mary's wisdom. I imagine in 10 years I will still have this book at my desk but it might be dog-eared and covered in notes and highlights.
