About the Author
Mary E. Marshall is an entrepreneur who has spent her career making small businesses into successful ventures. She has done this both as a CEO and business owner herself, and as an executive coach and consultant. Mary has also worked with Vistage International as a peer coach to CEOs and business executives. While at Vistage, Mary was awarded the Rookie of the Year, Chair Excellence, and Star awards, and received the Master Chair designation. She was consistently ranked among the top Vistage Chairs in the country and was the first woman in Vistage history to hold the #1 Chair ranking for the U.S. In 2012 Mary left corporate life at Vistage to go back to what she loves best: working directly with entrepreneurs to help them achieve their dreams. She launched Marshall Advisors, LLC as an Executive Advisory agency to work with CEOs and their executive teams to help them achieve their goals more quickly and efficiently, and to have some fun while doing it! In addition to her work with business entrepreneurs, Mary also shares her expertise with Social Venture Partners and teaches a class for entrepreneurs at The Small Business Administration. She is a dynamic thinker and writer and what she has accomplished in this book is what every person in business dreams - a path to success, whether from the CEO chair of a huge corporation who wants to stay on top and ahead of the game, or those many minds searching for a recipe for starting a small business and seeing it actually succeed. Mary's credentials speak clearly: she is herself an entrepreneur who has spent her career making small businesses into successful ventures, both as a CEO and business owner herself, and as an executive coach and consultant. An entrepreneurial game changer - you'll want to keep this one handy.

Mary Marshall's book, Putting Together the Entrepreneurial Puzzle, couldn't be more perfectly timed. The strength of our economy will depend on the growth in new ventures and we need people with the bravery to go out on their own and start these new companies. Now that brave group has a handbook. The wealth of knowledge contained in this book is unbelievable. To be honest, I wish I had had this book while I was working on my Bachelor's degree. It truly is the blueprint for creating your own company and getting it started off on the best foot possible. According to Bloomberg 8 out of 10 businesses fail within the first 18 months. That's a startling number. With the tools provided within this book I hope we can empower the young minds setting out to create new businesses to have the tools necessary to ensure their success.

Within our post-recessionary economy there is a growing understanding that the biggest players in our economy moving forward will be the small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures. It is unlikely that we will see large job growth within established large companies they are simply too big already and if anything will be downsizing as companies continue to find new ways to build efficiencies and automation. However, there is light at the end of our tunnel as the market demands are shifting toward smaller businesses; local vs. foreign, mom-and-pop vs. corporation, etc. Meanwhile the market is making it known that we want to talk to a person not a computer, we want to be able to walk in to the store and hold your product in our hands before we buy, and we want our money to benefit our neighbor not someone across the country or outside of the country. We must also not forget that entrepreneurship is the epitome of the American dream and the American way. It's what we do. It's what we will continue to do which is good because our economic survival as a global power will depend on it. This is not meant to be a post of pre-apocalyptic propaganda, it's the blunt truth. Alas there is hope, I have read recent reports that 1 in 3 Gen Yers have "owner" listed as their job title on their resume whether it is a side venture or their primary job and source of income. Us millennials are very entrepreneurial and it seems most of us have a dream of one day working for a start-up.

What I appreciate most about Mary's book is that as clich� as it sounds, I truly feel almost anyone can benefit from reading this book especially in the business world. It is applicable to any business out there and offers a macro perspective on how businesses operate and how all of the moving pieces fit together to form the complete enterprise. I gained so much insight and walked away with actionable items that I can bring to life at my current job. The advice I gained applies to almost everyone and was a good reminder that we need to take ownership of our piece of the puzzle and realize the big picture. If I have been vague, it was intentional. I don't want to spoil the content of this book for anyone who gets their hands on a copy. I'm not sure I could successfully convey the richness of this book or do this book justice trying to summarize Mary's wisdom. I imagine in 10 years I will still have this book at my desk but it might be dog-eared and covered in notes and highlights.

About the Author
William J. Baumol received his B.S.S. at the College of the City of New York and his Ph.D. at the University of London. He is professor of economics at New York University and senior research economist and professor emeritus at Princeton University. He is a frequent management consultant to major firms in a wide variety of industries in the United States and other countries as well as to a number of governmental agencies. He has been president of the American Economic Association, and three other professional societies. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, created by the U.S. Congress, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin. Dr. Baumol is the author of more than 35 books as well as hundreds of journal and newspaper articles that have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Alan S. Blinder earned his B.A. at Princeton University, his M.A. at the London School of Economics and Ph.D. at MIT. He teaches at Princeton University and is the author of the best seller, After the Music Stopped, about the financial crisis and its aftermath. Dr. Blinder served on President Clinton's first Council of Economic Advisers and then as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, thereby playing a role in formulating both the fiscal and monetary policies of the 1990s. Dr. Blinder, now a regular columnist for THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, has written newspaper and magazine columns on economic policy for more than thirty years. Big Picture Economics

I studied under Alan Blinder and I know he is a brilliant man, but his book is not disciplined enough. Explanations are reduced at the cost of large big-picture concepts which are, as a result, carelessly encountered. Additionally, the reader will be surprised at how much the text is littered with typos.

Great information, poorly organized!

I used this book for my college intro to macroeconomics course. The information in the book is really well explained, I never had a hard time understanding and it was enough to read it once and then be able to work on problem sets. Moreover, it really helped me understand lectures much better. However, one thing that I really hated about how it is organized was the fact that introduced some examples in text boxes cutting the paragraphs and making the reader move back and forth in order to finish reading the chapter. Besides this, in my class I used to use graphs intensively and in the book I encountered information about graphs that were on the next page and I had to keep moving back and forth in order to understand. It was not a big deal in the beginning, but as I started to review for my exams it became so annoying.

It got me through...

I ended up purchasing a used paperback copy of this edition. It was used, so the damages have nothing to do with my opinion. Everything is explained clearly, with some long winded political bias of course, but you get through the content. Plenty of visual aides.

Print quality isn't great

I've only read a few chapters of this book and don't get me wrong, the quality of the content is fantastic! However, that doesn't excuse the poor printing quality. Its a digital scan printed on regular copy paper. It has also been enlarged slightly which makes the text and pictures a bit blurry. Compared to other chiro books that fall within a similar price range, the quality of the print of this book falls short, which was very disappointing.

About the Author

Felix Hufeld is President of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) for the banks of the Eurozone. Previously he was Chief Executive Director Insurance Supervision at BaFin. He was also Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and member of the Management Board of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA). Previously he was Partner at Westlake Partners. From 2001 to 2010 he served as Chief Executive Officer of Marsh Germany, Austria, and Northern Europe of Marsh & Mclennan Companies Inc. Prior to this he worked for Dresdner Bank as their Global Head Group Corporate Development, and for The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He studied Law in Freiburg and received a Master in Public Administration at Harvard University.

Ralph S. J. Koijen is a Professor of Finance at London Business School. His areas of expertise are health and insurance markets, investments, and financial econometrics. He is also a Research Fellow of the CEPR and Netspar. Before joining London Business School, he was visiting Assistant Professor of Finance at New York University's Stern School of Business, and an Assistant and Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Professor Koijen's research has been published in leading journals, such as Econometrica, the American Economic Review, The Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Financial Economics. He has received various awards for his work including the Richard A. Crowell Memorial Prize, the Roger F. Murray Prize, Swiss Finance Institute Outstanding Paper Award, the Glucksman Institute Research Prize, and the Amundi-Smith Breeden Distinguished Paper Prize.

Christian Thimann is AXA's Group Head of Regulation, Sustainability and Insurance Foresight, based in Paris. From 2014-16 he has been on the Board of Directors of AXA Investment Managers and Alliance Bernstein Investment Managers, New York. He is also an External Member of the French Council of Economic Advisors and an Affiliated Professor at the Paris School of Economics. Previously Dr Thimann held senior positions at the European Central Bank (ECB), including Director General and Advisor to the President from 2008 to 2013. He also served as an Economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. Dr Thimann holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics, and a PhD from Ludwig-Maximilians Universit�t M�nchen.
