Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a now-classic novel about two women: Evelyn, who’s in the sad slump of middle age, and gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode, who’s telling her life story. Her tale includes two more women—the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth—who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, offering good coffee, southern barbecue, and all kinds of love and laughter—even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present will never be quite the same again.

From the Publisher
"The people in Miss Flagg's book are as real as the people in books can
be. If you put an ear to the pages, you can almost hear the characters
speak. The writer's imaginative skill transforms simple, everyday events
into complex happenings that take on universal meanings."
--Chattanooga Times
"This whole literary enterprise shines with honesty, gallantry, and love
of perfect details that might otherwise be forgotten."
--Los Angeles Times
"A sparkling gem."
--Birmingham News
"Watch out for Fannie Flagg. When I walked into the Whistle Stop Cafe she
fractured my funny bone, drained my tear ducts, and stole my heart."
--Florence King, Author of Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady
"Admirers of the wise child in Flagg's first novel, Coming Attractions,
will find her grown-up successor, Idgie, equally appealing. The book's
best character, perhaps, is the town of Whistle Stop itself--too bad
trains don't stop there anymore."

An amazing book, by an a amazing author
By Maria
An amazing book, by an a amazing author. It's honestly one of my all time favorite books, & is very inspirational. It's based off of four main female characters, set in two different times. Two characters, Idgie & Ruth are two young girls set in the 1920's who have fallen in love with one another, but have many things to keep them apart. The other two female leads are Evelyn, & Ninny who are set in the present day of the 1980's. Evelyn visits her mother in law, Big Mama every Sunday at her nursing home with her husband. One day she wanders out into the visiting lounge, & meets Ninny, an elderly old woman who begins to tell her the story of her, & her family/friends lives. Soon Evelyn & Ninny become good friends, & Evelyn becomes immersed into the stories of Ninny's past. From there out, the story of Idgie & Ruth's lives begins.

Loved it!
By JE
Well, first of, the book is rather different to the film, so lower your expectations if you would like to see the film in written form. It is surely more detailed. Some people pointed out that there is too much swearing in the book, which I don't agree with. There are about two parts of the story when there is swearing, but one might watch movies with much more swearing in them. It didn't bother me at all. Also the homosexual relation between the two protagonists is a given. In the film it is hinted that they might be lesbians and in the book you know they are! Again, if you get offended by that, don't bother reading this wonderful book. There are also jumps in time, going back and forth, and some stories might get a bit confusing if you don't remember the names of all characters, but nothing to throw me off... All in all, I loved it, and would surely recommend to other readers.

Intriguing Structure
By Donna Smith
The story jumps from past to present and in between to give the background and story from different viewpoints and times. Wonderful dialogue, humorous, very well done! Thought it might be hard to keep straight with the switching of time, characters and setting but it flowed well. Some laugh out loud parts, some sad. Swearing in dialogue, but not coarse or inappropriate, if that is a concern. It is an adult novel. Set in Alabama.
