Some trends can be silly. You’ve had some clothing or a hairdo that you would just prefer to never see again — and you are so very happy Facebook wasn’t around when you indulged.

Other trends are significant and even good for you. Kale is one of those. All of a sudden, kale is popping up everywhere. In restaurants, in grocery stores and the farmers markets, and on book shelves. If you go to Amazon and search for “kale” there are 123 hits today, with certainly more tomorrow. And most of these books are recent, published just in the last year.

So, if want to find excellent kale recipes, maybe make your own kale chips because the Whole Foods price reminds you of gold and silver, where do you turn? Which of those new kale cookbooks really gives you a bevy of wonderful recipes that you will enjoy and return to?

I’m intrigued by Let Them Eat Kale! by Julia Mueller from Skyhorse Publishing. A first, and a minor reason, is that I do believe Marie Antoinette unfortunately was misquoted. Again, that was a before-Facebook event so we’ll never know.

What we do know is that author Julia Mueller has worked with dedication to fashion an array of recipes, from breakfast to dinner’s main dishes, that employ kale as a key ingredient. Sometimes as the dominant ingredient, sometimes simply as an addition to integrate the nutritional values that make kale such a useful food.

In her Introduction, Julia presents kale from multiple aspects, explaining how that very basic and bitter taste can infiltrate into your culinary life. Julia’s a convert, preferring kale to other greens in her salads. If you read my review of Taste, you know that there are genetic issues at play here: while humans normally avoid bitter foods, we have evolved to go for the healthy ones. And kale, as Julia points out, is very healthy. Kale is a nutrient-dense superfood packed with vitamins and minerals. The varieties of kale and the varieties of ways to cook it are all presented by Julia in few key pages.

Then it is time for the recipe chapters. Here they are with some representatives of Julia’s clever yet practical recipe development:

Some are old food friends with kale just woven into the mix to modify the flavor, texture and nutritional values, like the Southwestern Bell Peppers. Some recipes — the Eggplant, Kale and Chickpea Tacos, for example — display Julia’s creative instincts. You’ll find many totally new dishes here that will entice you to experiment in your kitchen.

And, thankfully, there is no Dessert chapter here with silly Kale Brownies. Julia displays some serious common sense along with her sparkling creativity.

It’s impossible to thumb through this book and not stop several times to ponder a recipe. A major reason for that is the accompanying photos. Each recipe gets a lovely full page close up shot of the dish. And, in a bright book design by Skyhorse Publishing, the photos extend all the way to the edge of the page. There are no photo margins and the effect is just what you need: the photos seem to pour out beyond the page, inviting you to look twice and hopefully begin cooking.

Suzen and I began with kale salads a couple of years, just one of those culinary accidents that happen. For her corporate team building events at Cooking by the Book, Suzen introduced kale salad onto the menu and the effect was pretty dramatic: we’ve had corporate lawyers coming back into the kitchen asking for seconds. Now, with Let Them Eat Kale! we have a wonderful array of salads and beyond to treat our customers and ourselves.

I was very disappointed. It was a good idea to see how versatile a popular addition to a healthy diet can be. But Julia Mueller needs an editor or at least a friend who is a novice cook willing to try her recipes exactly as they are written.
Did she mean to use the ear of corn with the kernels removed?
If step 2 is to preheat the oven to 400 degrees, why wait to use it for the two hours the ingredients sat in the refrigerator, and then put the oven to 375?
If you are making burrito, wouldn't it be good to tell how to assemble them?
Why not start the instructions with the process that takes longer and then the one that could be done while the first cooks?
If she lists 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese in the ingredients, why do the instructions say to add grated parmesan?
Please! The ingredients she is working with are wonderful and there is an imaginative combination of flavors.
But beware: this is a book for experienced cooks willing to finish the process of recipe writing that the author and published did not do.

I have been following Julia’s blog for over a couple years now and have always loved her passion for produce and healthy veggies. Her vegetable –rich dishes are inspiring and simply beautiful. It was no surprise when she came out with this cookbook.. She uses her same “veggie packed” recipe philosophy in this book but makes a greater emphasis on healthy kale and she does it so creatively and deliciously! If you hate kale, this book will show you how to ENJOY this green and if you already love kale, you're going to be in for a treat.

This book is full of 75 amazing recipes that literally transform this tough green into delicious dishes. Recipe are simple and also many are gluten-free, vegetarian or dairy-free. Every single recipe is packed with healthy proteins and other great vegetables.

Now Leonard lives with his dogs and his sometime girlfriend in a run-down trailer outside town, deals a few drugs, and studies journals from the Civil War. Travis becomes his student, of sorts, and the fate of these two outsiders becomes increasingly entwined as the community's terrible past and corrupt present bear down on each of them from every direction, leading to a violent reckoning--not only with Carlton, but with the legacy of the Civil War massacre that, even after a century, continues to divide an Appalachian community.

Rash's finely wrought third novel (after Saints at the River) follows the wayward trajectory of high school dropout Travis Shelton, who stumbles on a neighbor's crop of marijuana while out fishing in Madison County, N.C. He steals a few plants to sell to Leonard Shuler, a divorced and disgraced former high school teacher, who is living in a trailer and selling drugs. Travis has a violent run-in with the father-and-son Toomeys, who own the crop, and is left hospitalized and homeless. He moves in with Leonard and his pill-popping girlfriend. There, Travis and Leonard study the Civil War ledgers and journals of a Dr. Candler, and learn of the county's seismic upheaval during the Shelton Laurel Massacre and its aftermath. Meanwhile, the Toomeys, who do business with Leonard, are not finished exacting their pound of flesh, this time from Leonard. Rash's vivid prose depicts his characters' dependence on drugs, alcohol and hell-raising with sympathy, rendering their shared sense of futility and economic entrapment without sentimentality or easy answers. The Civil War sections are less successful, but they convey the past's hold on the present and ground Rash's Appalachian wanderers in a shared vision of American immobility.

A Quick Read

Ron Rash tells a compelling story. From about the fifth page, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down. In a tale somewhat reminiscent of Winter's Bone, he builds quite a bit of pathos for his two main characters--an ex-teacher now drug dealer and a high school boy with an abusive father. It wraps up somewhat unrealistically, with some of the characters needing more fleshing out. However, it will be hard to forget Carlton Tooney, the kingpin of the Appalachian town, who can sing like an angel but whom it would be most unwise to cross. Rash is a talented writer, who creates vivid images and pitch-perfect sentences. The book is short, and there is plenty of rich material there that could have been expanded so that the characters' motives were more convincing and some loose ends handled a bit better. Overall, though, I enjoyed it.

One to definitely read

This is the third novel by Ron Rash that I have read, Mr. Rash never fails to impress me with his writing style. The World Made Straight introduces us to a way of life many cannot imagine, and his way of telling this story makes you feel that you are right there.

I am so looking forward to picking up his next novel, and suggest this author as one to definitely read.

Worth a read

Finished this book yesterday after reading it on and off for about three weeks. The characters in the book are developed well, though I think some of the descriptions and plot arcs are repetitive. Rash takes the time to develop an intriguing plot, but the ending of the book is a bit rushed. Regardless, this book is worth the read, especially if you have any interest in Appalachian communities and the aftermath of war. The characters are relatable and easy to sympathize with.

For this third edition, all chapters have been extensively revised and updated. The text has been considerably expanded to provide a comprehensive yet practical overview of the state of the field. Two new chapters have been added: "Psychometrics in Neuropsychological Assessment" and "Norms in Psychological Assessment." The first two chapters present basic psychometric concepts and principles. Chapters three and four consider practical aspects of the history-taking interview and the assessment process itself. Chapter five provides guidelines on report-writing and chapters six through sixteen consist of detailed, critical reviews of neuropsychological tests, and address the topics of intelligence, achievement, executive function, attention, memory, language, visual perception, somatosensory olfactory function, mood/personality, and response bias. A unique feature is the inclusion of tables that summarize salient features of tests within each domain so that readers can easily compare measures. Additional tables within each test review summarize important features of each test, highlight aspects of each normative dataset, and provide an overview of psychometric properties. Of interest to neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, and educational and clinical psychologists working with adults as well as pediatric populations, this volume will aid practitioners in selecting appropriate testing measures for their patients, and will provide them with the knowledge needed to make empirically supported interpretations of test results.

An Excellent Resource for Neuropsych Clinicians

This is an excellent source for beginning and advanced clinicians. The descriptions of the tests and test administration are concise and easy to understand. In addition, the norms for each test are included. The tests are grouped by the what specific areas they measure (i.e., Intelligence, Achievement, Memory, and Sensory and Motor areas). Since this text covers a wide array of tests, it is well worth the investment.

Greatly Inferior to 2nd Edition

The 2nd edition of the Compendium is an indispensable collection of norms for NP tests, many in the public domain. I bought the 3rd edition assuming that it would provide updated norms drawing on research in the intervening years, but I was sorely disappointed.
The 3rd edition contains much less actual data than its predecessor. It is mostly a compendium of reviews of commercially available assessment products, some having nothing to do with NP. If I wanted that, I would have bought the latest Groth Marnat. I wish the editors had taken the time to incorporate norms and research findings since 1998 instead of throwing together this lazy hodgepodge.

This book is an excellent update of the previous edition. Vastly comprehensive and well organized, it is a great technical resource and an easy read. I highly recommend this book as an essential reference for neuropsychology.

Wanna' Make Comics? Start Here...

I brought an advance copy of this book into a college illustration class I teach. The class was quite impressed. In fact, two students went onto Amazon online and bought it instantly. Usually I discourage shopping during class, but Drawing Words and Writing Pictures is an answered prayer for the aspiring comics artist.

This is an ideal text for a 15-week class in comics. It also has guidance for starting an informal collective class. It includes suggestions for the stereotypical solitary artist, who the authors are gracious enough to refer to as ronin. There is a wealth of info on the narrative process, page design, lettering, pens, and even Photoshop scanning advice.

The authors' individual web pages present a lot this DIY info, so search out their sites, see if their philosophies appeal to you. The book contains multiple perspectives from two remarkable artists. Matt Madden is into "formalist" styles, working within Houdini-like constraints. Jessica Abel's La Perdida is one of the great masterpieces of the long-form graphic novel.

From George Herriman to Robert Crumb, Charles Burns, to Kaz and John Porcillino, the book is crammed with a diversity of styles. Wide-ranging and inclusive, no matter what one's preferred comics style, from manga to superhero to alternative, you will find something to like here.

Instructors will find the bibliography alone is worth the price of admission, I teach a seven-week college comics course each fall. My plan is to email the students over the summer, tell them to get this book and get started on the exercises. The ronins will get a head start and their classmates will lose face.

Scott McCloud's Making Comics is also a valuable college course text for serious students, who have some background in reading comics and thinking critically about the artform. Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, however, has practical exercises for students at any level. Highly recommended.

Don't miss this one.

I've bought just about all the "How To Draw Comics" type books out there, and they are mostly pretty mediocre. They have some good info in them, but leave many more questions unanswered. This is definitely the best of the bunch, especially since it talks about much more than just the drawing part of comic creation. Panel design, inking, lettering, etc. is all in here. The presentation and writing style is nice and it flows well.

The only real complaints I have about this book, were mentioned by one of the other reviewers, and I have to agree: 1) there is a LOT of wasted space in this book, where the print and/or pictures take up like half or 2/3 of the page. And 2) the type face is a little small. This wouldn't be such a problem if the books dimensions didn't make it a little unwieldy and big. So, the impressive page count isn't as impressive as I previously thought. If they fixed those two problems, I'd most likely give it 5 stars.

Problems aside, this is definitely not a book you want to pass on. Check it out and I'm sure you'll be pleased.

A Welcome Addition to Your Collection

I am a BIG fan of both Abel and Madden's work. I go to BOTH of their websites several times a month and "La Perdida" and "99 Ways To Tell A Story" are part of my collection of graphic novels.

This book is great for high school & college art teachers who want to teach sequential art to their classes. I believe the content is particularly suited for art majors that are interested in the finer points of visual narrative. And you can tailor your curriculum around the chapters if you so choose. If you want to use these for middle school kids I think simpler steps need to be added. I like the fact that people can form groups: "Nomads" OR go do it alone: "Ronins" and follow the lessons independently.

This book is NOT bad.

All the chapters and lessons are made to be studied in sequence and if you are an old timer to comic art you can easily skip to other chapters; which I did alot. A seasoned pro will probably go to the chapters that interest him/ her the most. One chapter that I REALLY like was called "Black Gold" the chapter on using and inking with a brush.

The other chapters on page layout, panel construction, character design,
facial features/ figure anatomy were VERY good.

My ONLY complaint was the layout of the book. My [web]comic artist collegues & I felt there was TOO much white space waisted on each page, the typeface was too small and that neon orange color used throughout the book distracting. It was hard to read and strained the eyes.

Plus being a webcomic artist myself I wanted to see MORE about using the computer for making comics. It covered scanning, re-sizing, adjusting your line art in PhotoShop, etc. The chapter on lettering was good; but they tended to downplay the use of COMPUTER LETTERING. They make a STRONG point in favor of HAND LETTERED comics; but it would have been nice if they address lettering on the computer as well.

My Suggestions:
A. Read the book cover to cover.
B. Do the Exercises. I am in a NOMAD group; plus I'm doing the RONIN thing as well.
C. Do the Homework.
D. Go back to your favorite chapters again and again.
E. Cross reference this with OTHER books on how to make comics.

This book is a welcome addition to any comic artist's arsenal of graphic narrative/ sequential art references. Use it along with books by Will Eisner & Scott McCloud and you'll be fully versed in the Language of Comic Art.

Excellent book, great for beginners

I thought I knew enough to get me through most minor situations on the water until, of course, I found myself in one that I couldn't get out of alone. Not wanting this to happen to again I was considering a course but thought I would check out a book first. I am sure glad I did as I now understand how to fix the problem that stranded me for six hours in the middle of winter but what maintenance would have prevented it.

My engine is running smooth as silk and the satisfaction I have from doing myself was enough to make me think this was a great purchase, besides the cost of maintenance by a mechanic I always suspected I could do myself. I feel confident that I can get out of any situation, only for real this time!

A couple of days ago I was chatting to a neighbour when the subject of boats came up, he was complaining of a knock he couldn't find a source of. When I told him three possible sources that he hadn't thought of I know he was impressed.

CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH!

A Great Beginner's Guide to Marine Diesel Engines

This is a must-have guide for any owner of a boat with a marine diesel engine...or anyone who regularly goes out in one.

It includes sections on the components and workings of the engine, typical repairs and maintenance and the necessary tools. Much engine maintenance can be carried out by the boat owner with the help of this manual.

The book is filled with illustrations that are easy to understand and they gave me the confidence to work on the engine myself, or pass it off to someone who can follow the directions.
