The authors have done an outstanding job of discussing characteristics to unite aspects of parasite infection that students can use to create a framework for understanding the individual species they will encounter in clinical training and practice. After graduating from the Glasgow Veterinary School and a short period in the pharmaceutical industry, he devoted his professional career to teaching and research. He has served as Vice-President of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology and Secretary of the European Veterinary Parasitology College.

Mark Fox, BVetMed, PhD, FHEA, DipEVPC, MRCVS, Professor of Veterinary Parasitology, The Royal Veterinary College, London

He has over thirty years’ experience of teaching and research in the veterinary parasitology field, having graduated from The Royal Veterinary College and spent a period in small animal practice.� His current research interests focus on the epidemiology of parasite infections in both domestic and wild animals.� He was awarded the William Hunting medal in recognition of avian coccidiosis research.�

Provides a well rounded background

I bought this book as an introduction to Cleopatra after watching the Rome mini-series. I wanted to get an idea if the story was accurate. This book provides a great introduction, but left me with the impression that her life is shrouded in mystery. The author often went off on tangents to fill in a complex background that most readers (including myself) are not familiar with. These tangents include Egyptian geneology, the layout of cities, and the history of Egypt. These deviations were generally interesting, but I often found myself wondering how this all fit back into Cleopatra's life, and why they were included.

I found the sections of the book where the author explained the myths surrounding Cleopatra and broke down the possible origins, and debunked them the most interesting. I felt these left the best impression of what her life must have been like, and the complex world she maneuvered in.

Great book if you want to START learning about Cleopatra

As a starting point for learning about Cleopatra, this is a great book. However, if you want to go beyond the basics and what was reported by historians two thousand years ago, I would buy Cleopatra: A Biography by Michael Grant. Grant's book examines Cleopatra's life on a deeper level and with more speculation as to whether this and that might have happened, whereas Cleopatra: Last Queen of Egypt reports speculation as fact and doesn't examine all facets of disputed events (such as her suicide). Overall, a good book, although given my vast readings on ancient Rome, I do question some of the facts, such as what became of Cleopatra's two surviving sons with Mark Antony.

Review of Tyldesley's 'Cleopatra'

This is a fair, thoroughgoing biography of Cleopatra. It considers several aspect of her life, including her relationships with Caesar, Antony and the Ptolemaic family, as well as her impact on Egyptian politics and religion. However, I'm sorry to say this is the worst in a series of excellent ancient Egyptian biographies. Where Tyldesley usually takes a careful look at existing archaeological sites and native texts, this biography is rendered (perhaps appropriately) through an analysis of Greek and Roman written sources. I'm disappointed, in any case, to see that this work is more of a typical biography and less of a Tyldesley biography. I miss her careful fact-finding attitude and detailed analysis of data. However, I wouldn't go so far to say that this work is less than satisfactory.

Worthwhile, but I was somewhat disappointed with the CAD

This is the second half of Alex Crawford's two volume set on the classic Gloster Gladiator biplane.

The book is a 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", 160 page, square bound card cover in MMP's White Series (No 9114). The pages are broken down as follows:

15 pages of color photographs and histories of surviving examples.

13 pages of a translation of a Swedish maintenance manual for the J8/J8A version and accompanying black and white photos.

9 pages of technical description along with contemporary technical illustrations and black and white photographs.

6 pages of line drawings in 1/72nd scale.

6 pages of CAD drawings showing the basic Gladiator structure.

58 pages of close up detailed color photographs of surviving examples complemented by more CAD drawings.

6 pages of close up detailed color photographs of a surviving Swedish J8.

6 pages of anaglyph (3D) drawings with glasses included.

42 pages of color plans and profiles showing various color schemes.

The biggest disappointment for me were the CAD drawings. Although competently executed, there were two problems that made them less than what they could have been. First, most were either shown at too small a size to make out much detail or if they were full page size showed the entire aircraft. Only the cockpit drawings were really satisfactory in this regard. Second, the drawings were aluminum color over a dark background which also made picking out detail tough. I think multiple colors for clarity would have been the way to go. Also, the the rear engine drawing on the top of page 91 looks quite incomplete. There doesn't seem to be any way for air to get into the engine!

The 3D drawings do nothing for me as I can't achieve the proper effect with normal glasses combined with the 3D glasses.

On the plus side the color photographs are really outstanding and worth the price of the book by themselves.

Recommended for anyone with an interest in the aircraft. I'll be interested to see if others had the same issues with the CAD drawings as I did or if it was a case of "just me".

A plane not ahead but behind its time.

It is often said that the Generals fight the last war. While not always true, the case of the Gloster Gladiator certainly proves the point. In the early 1930s the RAF issued specification F.7/30 for a new fighter. The Gladiator was the result. It was a plane that any World War I pilot would immediately recognize. Two wings, wooden frame covered with canvas, it was upgraded to have four rather than two machine guns, but that's about all. Sure enough the plane was designed and flown. It entered front line RAF service in 1937. Meanwhile the Germans began flying Me-109s in 1935. One memorable quotation:

Those old Gladiators aren't made of stressed steel like a Hurricane or a Spit. They have taut canvas wings, covered with magnificently inflammable dope, and underneath there are hundreds of small thin sticks, the kind you put under the logs for kindling, only these are drier and thinner. If a clever man said, 'I am going to build a big thing that will burn better and quicker than anything else in the world,' and if he applied himself diligently to his task, he would probably finish up by building something very like a Gladiator. — Roald Dahl

To be fair, the Americans weren't doing much better, the US Navy bought the Grumman F3F, another biplane. The US Army Air crop was flying the Boeing P-26 Peashooter which looks like a bi-plane with the top wing missing.

This books covers the Gladiator and gives its history. It is profusely illustrated and printed on high quality paper. It shows a tremendous amount of details about the aircraft which was flown by a surprisingly large number of countries.

About the Author
Francis A. Carey is a native of Pennsylvania, educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, at Drexel University (B.S. in chemistry, 1959), and at Penn State (Ph.D. 1963). Following postdoctoral work at Harvard and military service, he was appointed to the chemistry faculty of the University of Virginia in 1966. Prior to retiring in 2000, he regularly taught the two-semester lecture courses in general chemistry and organic chemistry. With his students, Professor Carey has published over forty research papers in synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry. In addition to this text, he is coauthor (with Robert C. Atkins) of Organic Chemistry: A Brief Course and (with Richard J. Sundberg) of Advanced Organic Chemistry, a two-volume treatment designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. He was a member of the Committee of Examiners of The Graduate Record Examination in Chemistry from 1993-2000. Frank and his wife Jill, who is a teacher/director of a preschool and a church organist, are the parents of Andy, Bob, and Bill and the grandparents of Riyad and Ava.

WARNING: Very helpful textbook, but contains A LOT of content so don't be discouraged when it takes you about 1 hour to understand 10 pages of content. The Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry 8th Edition IS A MUST IF YOU WANT TO ACE ORGO! It helped me obtain a B in Orgo 1, an A in Orgo II, and an A in Orgo II lab (granted my Orgo I professor was the same for my Orgo II class and lab so I understood his teaching techniques better which is key in picking an Orgo class! Consistency in teaching style is key for understanding!) Carey is capable of teaching chemistry using both examples of chemical reactions and written explanations. Chapters are organized in a logical order - very beneficial for one's initial exposure to new functional groups and reaction families. The written text clearly explains the mechanisms behind every reaction, providing a solid understanding of chemical reactivity. Reaction examples clearly show applications of stereo- and regio-chemistry, necessary reagents, and the influence of reaction conditions upon reactivity and reaction yields.

I used this book for 3 semesters upper-level undergraduate Organic Chemistry, and as a refresher reference for graduate-level Organic Synthesis, along with Carey's Advanced Organic Chemistry texts, which are equally helpful. Other undergraduate students that were assigned other textbooks have borrowed this book from me and remarked at how much better they were able to understand the material as presented by Carey. This book is B-23 approved!

Item in excellent condition and priced well!

This book is just what I needed for my Organic Chemistry class. I am rather pleased with the author's writing style and the way the book is laid out. It is already helping me understand concepts that I was missing out on due to my lack of a textbook. Out of everywhere I looked, this was the best deal for buying this book. The international edition textbooks were even more expensive than this one that I purchased. Shipping was a little slow, but well worth it. I am very satisfied!

Organic is rough, but this book is fantastic

An annoying feature of the book is the way they make you buy the answer book to compliment the book itself. I can understand space is an issue, but that answer book is highly priced itself. Other than that pet peeve this book is fantastic. Nearing the end of my second semester of organic chemistry this book has done its part. Read the book, and you'll do fine. You cannot go wrong by simply reading this book alone and ignoring the teacher since this book covers much more than the teacher can or will ever go over. It's not like you will have much of a choice in the book you want anyways, since most teachers don't give you that freedom, but don't be intimidated by this book since it does its job well.

Loved it!

I went into this book doubtful. I thought this book would be cheesy and an annoying facsimile of a fairytale, that was basically porn wrapped in riches.
I was dead wrong.
This book was so sweet, and so nerve wracking. You have two princesses, jelousy, betrayal of family, and other delectble dram. Will she fall for him? Is it a boy? These twists and turns sucked me in.
The plot moved quickly, but charecter growth was realistic. I finised this book in one day, and was shocked there were so few revews.
You never know exactly what's going on.
I loved Isabelle and her man together, and the honesty of that relationship. But is it Eric or Bronson? Perhaps... Yves?
Not Yves.
There were sex scenes that were pretty hot if you're into that, but they DO NOT take up the whole book, and can be easily skipped over without confusion or losing 20 pages of writing.
A pretty good book, fantastic considering its free.
I was doubtful, but decided to give this a chance. I did not regret it for a second, and read nonstop for several hours. I wouldn't have if I was busy, (it wasn't THAT good) but I do recommend reading it. To prove it, I wrote this long a$$ review to supplement the sparse responses.
Oh, and this book will not offend any sensibilities, except aforementioned sex and the occasional swearing (I think, it wa so rare I think of no examples.) The sex is before marriage -- you've been warned.
JUST READ IT! I applaud you for reding this whole thing, now read the book!

at first I wasn't in love but boy am I now. this book is so good the story captures the dangers of power and jealousy in a family it's touching and quite feisty as the main characters in the story...I absolutely love it!! you must bye it. I promise you that you won't regret it.

Cute short story but the age difference makes it iffy very rare encounter but it was good being disabled you try them all and still have a lot of time.
