For more than 80 years, the oil and gas industry has used seismic methods to construct images and determine physical characteristics of rocks that can yield information about oil and gas bearing structures in the earth. This book presents the different seismic data processing methods, also known as seismic "migration," in a unified mathematical way. The book serves as a bridge between the applied math and geophysics communities by presenting geophysicists with a practical introduction to advanced engineering mathematics, while presenting mathematicians with a window into the world of the mathematically sophisticated geophysicist.

From the reviews:

PURE APPLIED GEOPHYSICS

"The presentation is exceptionally good, with a systematic progression from simpler to more sophisticated problems. This is very helpful to those readers not familiar with the subject…Every seismological term and every necessary mathematical concept is explained so that the book is actually self-contained…The mathematics are…kept are at a sufficiently low level of mathematical sophistication to make the book easy for its intended readership…Another advantage of the book is a careful choice of the variables…Exercises stimulate the reader’s initiative and inquisitiveness. This is rather unusual in geophysical literature…Even for seasoned seismologists the book will provide an incentive to upgrade their know-how."

A Deadly Wandering: A Tale of Tragedy and Redemption in the Age of Attention, by Matt Richtel

From Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Matt Richtel, a brilliant, narrative-driven exploration of technology’s vast influence on the human mind and society, dramatically-told through the lens of a tragic “texting-while-driving” car crash that claimed the lives of two rocket scientists in 2006.

In this ambitious, compelling, and beautifully written book, Matt Richtel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times, examines the impact of technology on our lives through the story of Utah college student Reggie Shaw, who killed two scientists while texting and driving. Richtel follows Reggie through the tragedy, the police investigation, his prosecution, and ultimately, his redemption.

In the wake of his experience, Reggie has become a leading advocate against “distracted driving.” Richtel interweaves Reggie’s story with cutting-edge scientific findings regarding human attention and the impact of technology on our brains, proposing solid, practical, and actionable solutions to help manage this crisis individually and as a society.

A propulsive read filled with fascinating, accessible detail, riveting narrative tension, and emotional depth, A Deadly Wandering explores one of the biggest questions of our time—what is all of our technology doing to us?—and provides unsettling and important answers and information we all need.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: In 2006, a pair of rocket scientists died on a Utah highway, killed in a collision with a student named Reggie Shaw, who had been texting at the time of the accident. A Deadly Wandering uses this moment to launch itself into an investigation/rumination on the increasing presence of technology in our lives, probing for answers to the question How much is too much? This might have been boring if anyone but Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Matt Richtel had written it. The result is anything but: Richtel has combined his savvy as a New York Times science reporter with his skill as a writer of technology-infused thrillers to weave two separate, if related, stories together: the tragedy—and ultimate redemption—of Reggie Shaw, and the deleterious effects of technology on our brains, bodies, and culture. A Deadly Wandering is a riveting blend of humanity and science, and a masterful work of narrative nonfiction. —Jon Foro

Review
"Comprehensive research underlies this compelling, highly emotional and profoundly important story." - Kirkus (Starred Review)

“Keen and elegantly raw. ... Not just a morality tale but a probe sent into the world of technology. ... Richtel draws all the characters with a fine brush, a delicacy that treats misery both respectfully and front-on.” (Christian Science Monitor (One of the 10 Best Nonfiction Books of the Year))

“Richtel’s compassionate and persuasive book deserves a spot next to Fast Food Nation and To Kill a Mockingbird in America’s high school curriculums. To say it may save lives is self-evident.” (New York Times Book Review (Editor's Choice))

Matt Richtel brilliantly tells the story of the aftermath of a deadly distracted driving crash. His portrait is riveting. Intensely gripping, compelling, and sobering... A Deadly Wandering gives the potentially lethal risks of the digital age a very human face -- one which we can, if we’re honest, readily see in the mirror.” (Winnipeg Free Press (A Best Book of the Year))

“Exhaustively researched. ... Richtel brings a novelist’s knack for unspooling narrative conflict to bear on Shaw’s real-life drama.” (San Francisco Chronicle (A Best Book of the Year))

“Each page is... irresistible. ... A richly detailed and compellingly readable exploration of the ‘clash’ between our brains and the electronic devices that, for many of us, have become essential to ‘every facet of life.’” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

From the Back Cover

A landmark exploration of the vast and expanding impact of technology, rivetingly told through the lens of a deadly collision

One of the year's most original and masterfully reported books, A Deadly Wandering by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Matt Richtel interweaves the cutting-edge science of attention with the tensely plotted story of a mysterious car accident and its aftermath to answer some of the defining questions of our time: What is technology doing to us? Can our minds keep up with the pace of change? How can we find balance? Through Richtel's beautifully constructed narrative, a complex and far-reaching topic becomes intimate and urgent—an important call to reexamine our own lives.

On the last day of summer, an ordinary Utah college student named Reggie Shaw fatally struck two rocket scientists while texting and driving along a majestic stretch of highway bordering the Rocky Mountains. Richtel follows Reggie from the moment of the tragedy, through the police investigation, the state's groundbreaking prosecution (at the time there was little precedent to guide the court), and ultimately, Reggie's wrenching admission of responsibility. Richtel parallels Reggie's journey with leading-edge scientific findings regarding human attention and the impact of technology on our brains—showing how these devices, now thoroughly embedded into all aspects of our lives, play to our deepest social instincts and prey on parts of the brain that crave stimulation, creating loops of compulsion, even addiction.

Remarkably, today Reggie is a leading advocate who has helped spark a national effort targeting distracted driving, and the arc of his story provides a window through which Richtel pursues actionable solutions to help manage this crisis individually and as a society. A propulsive read filled with fascinating scientific detail, riveting narrative tension, and rare emotional depth, A Deadly Wandering is a book that can change—and save—lives.

Amazing.
By Kristine Lofgren
Heads up, don't buy this book if you have any sort of time sensitive work or activities planned. Once you start it, you won't be able to put it down, so plan accordingly.

A Deadly Wandering is one of those rare books that manages to convey scientific data in an interesting - riveting even - way. The book is all about attention, our ability to focus on one or more activities, and the impact of attention-demanding devices like phones and computers. It isn't preachy and it isn't dry, instead, Richtel combines the story of a Utah boy who killed two rocket scientists while he was driving his car while texting with the scientific research surrounding attention, focus and our modern technology.

Much of the book takes place in Utah, not only because the story is woven around Reggie Shaw, the boy who killed the scientists, but also because some of the most important research has come out of the University of Utah. I live in Utah and I was incredibly impressed with how carefully Richtel handled the local culture. Normally people writing about Utah fall into one of two camps: vilify the mormons or think the mormons can do no wrong. But Richtel stays fairly neutral even while injecting emotion and life into the story - no easy task. He talks about the insular nature of LDS communities without criticizing them and he mentions the philosophical flexibility of Utah representatives (for example: one individual is against any government interference in private life at all, except when it is government interference that supports their own moral beliefs) without turning them into evil caricatures or heroes.

I mention this for two reasons: first, the story is that much better because it is even-handed, but second, the story's main character, Reggie Shaw, is the type of person who requires a very careful hand. In fact, the entire topic does. Neither Reggie nor the people who find themselves distracted while driving are evil - even if they do awful things - and nothing in this life, these situations or this book is black and white. And that's a good thing, because by the end of the book, you find yourself questioning what you know and looking inward at yourself and your own behaviors, rather than passing judgement on the people in the book.

More than a story about a tragedy, it is a tale with a cast of characters that will change the way you look at people and will absolutely change the way you look at the technology in your life. Richtel isn't encouraging people to step back into some 17th century tech-free zone. But he is encouraging readers to look at their own behaviors and find the courage to be honest with oneself. Highly entertaining, endlessly informative and gorgeously written.

Compelling, Thought-Provoking, Must-Read Book
By C. Bennett
This captivating book asks important questions:
Is technology benign?
Has technology surpassed the limits of the human brain?
How much are humans capable of taking in, even when they are focused on something else?

The book is written in a narrative format, where the scientific information is woven into the stories of several people. The book is centered around a car accident, where two rocket scientists were killed by a teen who was texting while driving. The book is written in such an engaging way, that I could not put it down once I started it.

Along the way, I learned about how attention science evolved, beginning with World War II cockpit experiments. How much information can pilots take in, before they start making mistakes? The book goes through the advent of Silicon Valley, PCs, video games, and car phones. Such a rapid increase in technology has an effect on the human mind. Are those effects benign?

This book encouraged me to ask questions about science, technology, and the human brain. I will be thinking about it for a long time to come. This is a must-read book!

Seriously, This Book Can Change Lives
By Free2Read
I chose this book because I have young text fiends in my extended family and worry about them as they begin to drive. More than a manual of safety tips for parents of inattentive drivers, A DEADLY WANDERING closely follows the result of an accident that could have been avoided. We get to know the victims, the perpetrator, the families affected.

There are some passages of scientific detail on the brain, the ways that people can multi-task and the ways that they cannot. Though science, especially neuroscience, may be a no-go for some readers, it is definitely something for that latent scientist is me, the wordsmith.

A DEADLY WANDERING, written by Pulitzer Prize winner, Matt Richtel, will hold your attention as well as any well-written true crime book out there. That it is applicable to each and every family with a driver or a phone addict or a texter among them makes it that much more important. If I were teaching AP Lit or AP Science or a college course, this book would be on my syllabus. It is that important.

The Third Man Factor: Surviving the Impossible, by John Geiger

The Third Man Factor is an extraordinary account of how people at the very edge of death often sense an unseen presence beside them who encourages them to make one final effort to survive.

This incorporeal being offers a feeling of hope, protection, and guidance, and leaves the person convinced he or she is not alone. There is a name for this phenomenon: It's called the Third Man Factor.

If only a handful of people had ever encountered the Third Man, it might be dismissed as an unusual delusion shared by a few overstressed minds. But over the years, the experience has occurred again and again, to 9/11 survivors, mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, sailors, shipwreck survivors, aviators, and astronauts.

All have escaped traumatic events only to tell strikingly similar stories of having sensed the close presence of a helper or guardian. The force has been explained as everything from hallucination to divine intervention. Recent neurological research suggests something else.

Best-selling and award-winning author John Geiger has completed six years of physiological, psychological, and historical research on the Third Man.

He blends his analysis with compelling human stories such as that of Ron DiFrancesco, the last survivor to escape the World Trade Center on 9/11; Ernest Shackleton, the legendary explorer whose account of the Third Man inspired T. S. Eliot to write of it in "The Waste Land"; Jerry Linenger, a NASA astronaut who experienced the Third Man while aboard the Mir space station - and many more.

"THE THIRD MAN IS AN INSTRUMENT OF HOPE... THE BELIEF THAT WE ARE NOT ALONE"
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
This story will keep the interest of people who believe in a religious presence in their life... and it will just as strongly mesmerize people who don't. The "THIRD-MAN" is a term that was given to the phenomena that has been reported many... many... times by people from all walks of life... not only all around the world... but from above the earth as well... when they were "assisted" during a tumultuous event... that could have ended their lives. All of these people... that included... mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, solo sailors, shipwreck survivors, aviators... and even astronauts... admitted having a mysterious... yet calming... "presence"... either appear in a form they could actually see and talk to... or... that they just felt that someone was either leading them... or following behind them... when their life was on the line. Throughout the telling of these phenomenal stories... the author provides documented medical and historical evidence... that at times verifies that there really is a "THIRD MAN"... and at other times... neurologists attempt to explain it away... based on criteria such as thin air... or hallucinations. Every reader probably knows... that scientists admit... that they still don't know what a large part of the brain is capable of... and why it does what it does.

It takes a lot of courage for these famous people to openly write in books about their "THIRD-MAN" experiences... and they have been doing this for over one-hundred years. For the sake of any potential readers who might make a decision not to read this book because they're not interested in that thin line of "FAITH-AND-BELIEF"... I would like to wholeheartedly recommend you read this... even putting that subject aside... simply because of how utterly... utterly... fascinating the detailed stories of human survival... depicted in places such as the south polar island of South Georgia... or on Mount Everest... or deep under the sea... or in the middle of the ocean in giant storms... where a sailor is just too beaten down by the elements to even get off the floor... and yet somehow the boat steers itself through.

There is one story that involves Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men attempting to cross the south polar island of South Georgia... during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-16... that will grip you in such a way... that you will never look at the ability of a human being to survive... in the same way again. I will be shocked if you don't find yourself grunting... groaning... or moaning... as these poor men are stripped bare by the harshest elements on this planet. In a much more current and well known event... 9/11... Ron DiFrancesco... the last living survivor to make it out of the towers... tells how... when he was ready to give up... laying face down on the floor... overcome by smoke and gasping for air... "THEN, SOMETHING REMARKABLE HAPPENED: SOMEONE TOLD ME TO GET UP. SOMEONE, HE SAID, CALLED ME. THE VOICE-WHICH WAS MALE, BUT DID NOT BELONG TO ONE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE STAIRWELL-WAS INSISTENT: GET UP! IT ADDRESSED DiFRANCESCO BY HIS FIRST NAME, AND GAVE HIM ENCOURAGEMENT. IT WAS, HEY! YOU CAN DO THIS. BUT IT WAS MORE THAN A VOICE; THERE WAS ALSO A VIVID SENSE OF A PHYSICAL PRESENCE."

This book will not... cannot... give the final answer to the question that all mankind has always been looking for. "As the climber Greg Child said, solving the mystery of the "THIRD-MAN" is like a detective stalking the invisible man: there is no fingerprint, no solid evidence at all. The clues lie deep within us." And finally... and poignantly... "Paul Firth, the physician and climber who was joined by a "THIRD-MAN" on Aconcagua, argues that even if we accept prevailing neurological explanations for the "THIRD-MAN", a mystery endures:

**"A BIOLOGICAL EXPLANATION DOES NOT PRECLUDE A BENIGN METAPHYSICAL ORIGIN-AN EXPLANATION OF "HOW" DOES NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION OF "WHY".

Those who love adventure in the wilder parts of our planet will be enthralled by this book
By Amazon Customer
Anyone who loves adventure in the wilder parts of our planet will be enthralled by this book. According to Wikipedia, the "Third Man" factor is a phenomenon in which an unseen presence provides comfort or support during traumatic experiences.

The most famous example is recorded by Sir Ernest Shackleton, who said in his book about the harrowing final leg of his epic tale of struggle and survival in the Antarctic region "during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three."

Since then, numerous other reports of a strikingly similar nature have come to light. Geiger's book describes many of these experiences in vivid language.

Interestingly, it is not only people "in extremis" who experience the feeling of another presence at certain times in their lives. Geiger also describes many such examples, from the invisible friends of young children to the experiences of religious mystics.

A surprising number of people sense the presence of a loved one after death. Others have had vivid experiences of Guardian Angels at critical points in their lives.

Geiger makes the point that our minds have an ability to evoke "sensed presences" in many critical situations and that this is a powerful evolved survival mechanism. He marshalls good scientific evidence for this claim. It is all quite credible, but sometimes he seems to want to believe his hypothesis too much and reads too much into the evidence.

However that may be, it is the stories themselves that make this book well worth buying. We can choose whatever explanation we like for the "third man factor."

I am a keen trekker in the mountains and have travelled in some remote places. While I don't have a personal third man story to tell, Geiger's book gives me much comfort that a third man may come even to me in some future hour of need.

There is an excellent list of notes for readers who want to delve further into the subject.

THERE IS SOMETHING IN THIS BOOK FOR EVERY READER
By Rick
John Geiger's terrific new book was one of the more rewarding reading experiences I've ever had. Yes, it's entertaining--Geiger is a talented writer who recounts many thrilling tales here--but I was even more moved by the underlying message of hope. Whether you think the Third Man can be explained by science, or divine intervention, what is undeniable is that there exists within us an innate will to survive. What can possibly be more universal than that? There is something in this book for every reader.

Bomber Command (Zenith Military Classics), by Max Hastings

Bomber Command's air offensive against the cities of Nazi Germany was one of the most epic campaigns of World War II. More than 56,000 British and Commonwealth aircrew and 600,000 Germans died in the course of the RAF's attempt to win the war by bombing. The struggle in the air began meekly in 1939 with only a few Whitleys, Hampdens, and Wellingtons flying blindly through the night on their ill-conceived bombing runs. It ended six years later with 1,600 Lancasters, Halifaxes, and Mosquitoes, equipped with the best of British wartime technology, blazing whole German cities in a single night. Bomber Command, through its fits and starts, grew into an effective fighting force. In Bomber Command, originally published to critical acclaim in the U.K., famed British military historian Sir Max Hastings offers a captivating analysis of the strategy and decision-making behind one of World War II’s most violent episodes. With firsthand descriptions of the experiences of aircrew from 1939 to 1945 - based on one hundred interviews with veterans - and a harrowing narrative of the experiences of Germans on the ground during the September 1944 bombing of Darmstadt, Bomber Command is widely recognized as a classic account of one of the bloodiest campaigns in World War II history. Now back in print in the U.S., this book is an essential addition to any history reader's bookshelf.

Great re-evaluation of a major campaign
By Tom Munro
This book is a history of the British Bomber Command. The horror of world war one led the British to build a strategic air force as a means of avoiding the sorts of casualties faced in that war. It was hoped that by using air craft Germany could be made to surrender.
This book is an examination of the failure of that strategic concept. In the first days of the war the British tried a daylight raid on Bremen naval yards. It was generally thought that bombers could get through in daylight due to their speed and defensive armament. This turned out to be a false assumption and a large number of the British Bombers were shot down. Further raids confirmed the vulnerability of unescorted bombers and from that time on it was decided that British Bombers would fly only at night.
For some months bombers flew out at night and tried to bomb various military and industrial targets. The bombing was so inaccurate generally hitting farmland and forests that the Germans were not able to even work out what the intended targets were. The British carried out evaluations and found that only a small percentage of bombs were falling within miles of the targets.
As a result a change in strategy was adopted and that was to bomb the German civilian population. The reason for that was that cities by comparison were easy to find and the use of incendiaries could lead to destructive fires which could destroy housing stock.
The only problem with the strategy was that it resulted in the deaths mainly of the elderly women and children. The structure of German cities was such that the burning and bombing of cities only had a marginal effect on industrial production. (The situation was different in Japan where industry was dotted throughout cities and the fire bombing led to the collapse of industrial production in that country)
The German night fighter effort was reasonably successful against the British Bombers so that the casualty rates of British air crews was very high. The book argues that in general terms the campaign was a poor use of resources and had limited effects until near the end of the war. By late 1944 the German air force was practically destroyed and allied bombers by that time had such a preponderance that they were able to destroy the transport network and to destroy production.
The book is well written easy to read and a fascinating look at a topic that has been dominated by myth makers not truth seekers.

Excellent, factual & detailed narrative of RAF bombing
By A Customer
I read this on the advice of a friend after a tour of northern Germany during which I wondered why so many of the beautiful churches had been levelled in WWII. This book gives a detailed narrative of the strategy and tactics, as well as the horror on the ground and in the air of this controversial air campaign. Interesting and thought-provoking to read. Written by an Englishman.

THE AREA BOMBING OF GERMANY; ALMOST 600000 DEAD
By RAY SMITH
This is an excellent book that objectively traces the history and rationale for the area Bombing campaign against Germany that would lead to the deaths of 52000 aircrew and more than half a million civilians.
The book also relates the revulsion and guilt felt by many aircrew when confronted, after the war, with the results of their bombing missions.
Ironically these same aircrew still idolise their Operational commander - Bomber Harris, who never set foot on an operational squadron during the War.
Arguments are also related about the disagreements that Bomber Harris had with his American colleagues who wanted the Area Bombing campaign transferred to destroying synthetic oil plants and ball bearing factories. Harris wanted to continue bombing cities even when there was not much left to bomb.
When first published this book was severely criticised in England, for daring to suggest that the effort put into Area Bombing could have been better spent elswhere.
This is a thoroughly readable and thought provoking book.

Best authority on Reagan's early life
By Michael Albert Riccardi
COvering much of the same ground as Edmund Morris in his authorized biography, "Dutch," Garry Wills' "Reagan's America: Innocents at Home" is a much more successful look at the institutions and country that shaped the 40th President.
With his usual incisive analysis and beautiful use of the English language, Wills does what Morris found impossible: the discovery of Reagan's soul.
To Wills, Reagan is the logical product of the American heartland and of the institutions of the heartland: community service (he was a lifeguard first), small town media (he was a Des Moines, IA, radio announcer). Reagan is also shaped by the institutions of coastal America that are marketed to the heartland: movies and big business (when Reagan made the final turn toward conservatism, he was the national spokesman for General Electric). Finally, Reagan is also the product of a dysfunctional family, with some of the same logical results: a withholding from others, a love of the abstract and of fantasy.
At the end of Wills' study, the reader gains a clear impression of the forces that created Ronald Reagan and bonded him to the American people. It is true that Reagan, as Morris argues, is enigmatic. But he is not impossible to begin to understand. Wills is the essential guide to the Reagan who was fully formed long before he reached the White House.

Part Biography, Part Critical Cultural History
By John Hevelin
I have read many books by Gary Wills, and this is one of his best. It is an astonishing work of history and cultural analysis, impressive in the breadth of his learning and the depth of his insight. Mr. Wills writes knowledgeably and skillfully about a wealth of topics: the America of Mark Twain ... religious fundamentalism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ... the Great Depression ... history of Hollywood, including labor politics ... California politics ... the John Birch Society ... Cold War strategy, nuclear deterrance, and the "Star Wars" defense system ... relations with Latin America, the World Court, and the United Nations ... "supply-side economics," the Laffer Curve, and Reagonomics ... and much, much more, all to create the context in which to understand Reagan's success and his appeal to his constituencies.

Uncritical Reagan enthusiasts will not be happy with the way Wills dissects the contradictions inherent in Reagan the politician, but Wills's analysis is cogent and persuasive. Wills discusses at length the gap between word and deed in Reagan's career. Of Reagan as Governor of California, Wills writes: "Thus, the candidate who had run against big spenders quickly became the governor who asked for and got the highest tax raise in the history of California (or any other state)...." And of Reagan's first term as President, Wills writes: "In 1982, unemployment rose to 10.7 percent, higher than it had been since the Great Depression, along with the greatest number of bank failures since 1940. Record bankruptcies and farm closures were occurring.... He added as much to the national debt in those four years as had been accumulated in our national history to that point, so that one of every seven dollars spent by the government in 1985 went to paying interest on the debt." And Wills spends considerable time critiquing the myths of individualism and self-reliance that underlay the Reagan mystique.

Wills is critical of Reagan, but his assessment is never disrespectful or mean-spirited. Wills works hard to understand Reagan in terms of Reagan's own values and in terms of the values of the Americans that supported him. This is a remarkable study of a man and his times, and is well worth reading.

I was astonished to learn that while in high school, Reagan saved the lives of over seventy-five people while working as a lifeguard.

clueless in America
By A Customer
Wills dissects Ronald Reagan's career with a sharp scalpel calling attention to the man's ignorance, naivete and disingenuous story telling, all coexisting with personal charm and an optimistic nature. He ties in Reagan's notion of an innocent past and glorious future with American mythology. Reagan's appeal as the first amiable conservative (W would seem to be the second) stood him in good stead with the public. What were we thinking? This is not a hatchet job but a carefully reasoned and most thoughtful assessment of the man whose fanciful economic policies led the country into deep debt and tragically slowed social progress.

About the Author
EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849) is one of America's greatest and best-loved writers. Known as the father of the detective story, Poe is perhaps most famous for his short stories--particularly his shrewd mysteries and chilling, often grotesque tales of horror--he was also an extremely accomplished poet and a tough literary critic.Poe's life was not far removed from the drama of his fiction. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by a foster family. As a young man, he developed problems with gambling, debts, and alcohol, and was even dismissed from the army. His love life was marked by tragedy and heartbreak. Despite these difficulties, Poe produced many works now considered essential to the American literary canon.

One of the best collections of Edgar Allen Poe, good value
By Graham Patterson
One of the best collections of Edgar Allen Poe out there. This is a good value all around. Has a few stories that are hard to find and I appreciate the order of the book. The synopsis of his life and times in the beginning really helps the reader get into the strange time and place in American history that Edgar Allen Poe lived in.

Review
'This is an important and innovative text examining social science perspectives relating to dementia. Innes provides a comprehensive guide to the research literature, drawing on critical perspectives within Sociology and Social Gerontology. The book makes a significant contribution to re-thinking practice and policies for people with dementia'" - Chris Phillipson, Professor of Applied Social Studies and Social Gerontology, Keele University

"

'Anthea Innes, through the lens of a social scientist, provides a much needed historical and critical evaluation of where and why the study of dementia began, how it has developed in the areas of research, practice, and policy and what we need to do with this knowledge in order to create social change that improves the lives of people with dementia and their families. I know this is a book that I will often take down from my shelf, to teach my students, develop my lectures, and plan my future research projects' - "Professor Phyllis Braudy Harris, Department of Sociology & Director of the Aging Studies Program, John Carroll University

"

'There is a tendency in dementia studies to focus on individual psychosocial dynamics. This book reminds us how important it is to think about broader social and political forces as well. Drawing on key ideas in cognate disciplines, including social gerontology and disability studies, this book makes a significant contribution to the field of dementia studies. It will appeal to a wide range of students and academics, as well as those personally affected by the condition'" - Dr Ruth Bartlett, Bradford Dementia Group, University of Bradford

'A provocative and stimulating work that will be used by academics and advanced students of dementia, sociology and social gerontology for some time...This synthesis of dementia studies from a social science perspective is a valuable academic resource. In particular, it highlights the need for future dementia studies to examine not only the micro level of the experiences of people with dementia but also the social systems and processes that continue to shape their lives' -
Ageing and Society

'The book can be useful to readers of a variety of backgrounds, including students and researchers in Gerontology, Health and Medical Sciences, Social Work, Social Policy, Sociology and Psychology. It should also appeal to practitioners who work with people living with dementia. I could imagine even the friends and family members of people living with dementia might find the book interesting...Both useful and highly readable' -

[A] critical in-depth look at the political, economic, social, and cultural issues that frame and influence health, illness, and knowledge of dementia from a social sciences perspective... The book is well balanced and thorough in discussion of issues such as the twin stigmas of old age and dementia, the complexity and challenges of person-centered care (PCC), the cultural context of caregiving, and the ideals for advancing dementia research... Innes's discussion of caregiving is particularly effective and thought provoking, spanning more than just the chapter on caregiving itself but extending into the following chapter on dementia in cultural contexts
Kate de Medeiros
The Gerontologist

...provides social scientists with an insight into dementia knowledge and for those with practice experience it provides illustrations of how the social sciences can help to make sense of this work. There is room for such a text in meeting student needs by providing an up-to-date overview of social science perspectives. Educationalists will find it reliable and multi-purpose, in being a 'primer' for those new to dementia or to social science. It will also be a potential resource for nurse, social work and other practice educators who are new to dementia programmes or wish to expand their teaching. In my experience, this is particularly helpful when trying to convey key messages about multi-professional or integrated care. Very quickly, professionals from many disparate disciplines realise that they do not have all the answers. This book will therefore be of interest to the student or researcher on their own, but also to classes and teams

excellent overview of what is known about dementia, expecially useful for social workers and juman service professionals in understanding the disease, socoial factors, and community treatment options. Could have had more on the emerging literature on anticipatory fear of dementia.
