More about War than Revolution

The title of Gebru Tareke's book is slightly misleading: it is not about the Ethiopian Revolution -- how an ancient empire was violently transformed into an arguably modern political and social entity. His book instead covers how the 14 years the Ethiopian military spent 14 years waging war against its military opponents: Somalia, the Eritrean freedom fighters, and the Tigray Peoples' Liberation Front (TPLF) -- the last opponent being the current ruling group in Ethiopia.

Gebru does not provide a narrative of the fluctuating fortunes of the Ethiopian military; he provides details on only five of the numerous armed conflicts which occupy this period. One chapter narrates Ethiopia's successful Ogaden War. Another section retells the military activities of the decisive Battle of Shire, in which the TPLF decisively defeated a better-equipped yet demoralized and incompetent Ethiopian army. The remaining three chapters are snapshots at different moments of the final years of the Eritrean War of Independence.

Far more attention is spent discussing the dynamics of the Ethiopian military establishment. For most associated with the Ethiopian Revolutionary Army, Communist ideology was little more than a few required lectures and proper catch-phrases; according to Gebru, the majority were far more concerned with personal concerns like climbing up the hierarchy of power, lining their pockets or getting their children into foreign schools. Units were impotent due to chronic squabbling between military commanders and political commissars -- often for reasons unrelated to tactics or the well-being of their troops.

Although well-written & detailed, Gebru Tareke's approach may deter many readers who are more interested in reading a story with a beginning, a narrative arc, and a conclusion. But for discussing the more important issues of why one group of participants succeeded while others failed -- despite the heroism and sacrifice of thousands of participants -- Gebru's approach is the proper way to do help find the answers.

A great book

I decided to get this book because of the archives the Ethiopian government had made open to Gebru Tareke. I was hoping it would give an in depth insight in to the TPLF instead I found the book being revealing in some aspects like the battles, and the working of the derg. Nevertheless it's a great book and I diffidently recommend it to anyone interested in learning one of the darkest periods of Ethiopian history.

Over-priced. Over-rated. Over-promises and under-delivers. Save your money and purchase a better book.

Unfortunately I did not like this book and found it grossly over-priced for its length and the mundane and very basic nature of the information that was presented. It is not different or special in any way and it took me less than 30 minutes to read it.

The author consistently stops short of giving specific helpful advice. For example one of her tips is to "Arrange your shop for success" and she goes on to say that it is important to arrange colors and it is crucial to window dress your Etsy store. She presents a few pictures of her shop to show you what she means. And that's it. This "chapter" is little more than 2 pages. She doesn't offer any detailed explanations of exactly how to go about doing achieving that goal. None of the questions that came up for me while reading that chapter were answered like "Do I do this by dragging and dropping listings or do I have to organize my product by color and appeal up front before listing my items...". This book is supposed to be trying to show me how to make my very first $1000 on Etsy but seems to assume that I will know exactly what the heck she means and that I don't need any further guidance on how to implement her suggestion. Or that I can darn well figure it out for myself. For the price I paid for this book I don't want to have to figure it out. I want solid and specific information, thank you very much.

Perhaps the author's strategy is more along the lines of making money from the sales of her book about how she made her first $1000 on Etsy rather than making her Etsy shop a roaring success. I see from her shop account on Etsy (she has provided the links to her Etsy shop in the book) that she has made all of 157 sales (to the date of my writing this review) in the 16 months that her shop has been open. So we are not really reading the advice of someone who has developed a really successful Etsy shop, are we...? It appears to me that the author might still be struggling to make sales on Etsy herself.

So here’s my suggestion: Save your money, do a little more searching and invest your $4.99 or $8.44 (the prices she is charging for the kindle and paperback at the time of this writing on March 18, 2015) in a better book. One that is going to give you some solid information to really help you with your Etsy start up and give you information to help you pave the way for your future success rather than take too much of your money to show you how to make a mere $1000. If you are dying to know this author’s secrets to making $1000 selling on Etsy then go ahead and purchase it. Take 30 minutes, read it and make a few notes, then return the book and get your money back. Feeling ripped off this is what I did. Except I didn't find anything in this book that was noteworthy.

Solid Baseline for Beginners

Read via my partner's Kindle: I have read a number of books on Etsy start-up and this book is a short but pretty good outline of the basics of setting up a profitable Etsy shop. Probably best used as a quick starter book and then upgrade to Etsy Empire to complete the task and start selling creations on social media and networking. First $1000 provides the essentials that are needed to set up your shop to actually sell items.

Great Introduction to Pathology that I plan to keep well after graduation!

I love this book. I took pathophysiology about a year ago, and the visuals and easy explanations really helped me get a solid foundation of pathology. I am now an upper lever Clinical Laboratory Science student and sometimes find myself referencing this book in my upper level courses when I need a simple, to the point answer to help me understand my upper-level course work. This book was my first introduction to pathology and I am greatful. It is very well-written for an introductory level. It gives just enough information without overloading on the details (some textbooks have this problem where it rattles off a bunch of facts before getting to the big picture.) I will NOT be selling this book when I graduate. It is one of my favorite textbooks and I plan to have this for years to come.

About the Author
Sid Redner is a condensed-matter theorist whose research focuses on non-equilibrium statistical physics and its applications. Dr Redner has been on the physics faculty at Boston University since 1978 and has been a full professor since 1989. He has published 230 research articles and is the author of A Kinetic View of Statistical Physics with P. L. Krapivsky and E. Ben-Naim (Cambridge University Press, 2010). Dr Redner is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was a visiting scientist at Schlumberger Research in 1984-1985, the Ulam Scholar at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2004-2005 and a visiting professor at the Universite Paul Sabatier (Toulouse) and Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) in 2008.

Gamblers' ruin problems...

... formulated both discretely and continuously. Sidney Redner provides us with a stimulating and masterful treatment of first passage times from the standpoint of traditional statistical physics. This is both the strength and weakness of his attractive book. What's lacking is a systematic formulation with simple examples continuous in (x,t) that the reader can solve for herself. The formulation of the hitting probability for the simplest diffusion problem (the Wiener process) as a problem in electrostatics (pg. 24) is nice but woefully incomplete and inadequate, and is related to Durrett's ('Brownian Motion and Martingales in Analysis', 1984) attempts to formulate potential problems via Brownian motion averages using stopping times. What's missing in Redner's electrostatics approach can be found in Stratonovich's "Topics in the Theory of Random Noise" Vol. I: the use of Kolmogorov's backward time diffusion pde to calculate the average stopping time for general time translational invariant diffusion problems with variable drift and diffusio coefficients. And see Steele's "Stochastic Calculus" for a formulation of hitting times (stopping times) using Martingales formulated via Ito calculus and stochastic differential equations. Steele provides many interesting and instructive examples, including a simple calculation ofthe average stopping time for Wiener processes with and without drift (the Durrett-Steele Ito approach is much shorter than Stratonovich's Fokker-Planck method, and both approaches are instructive). Actually, Durrett (1984) shows assigns the most general method as 2 exerecises on pg. 255: to calculate the average hitting time by constructing a martingale that leads to solving the same backward tiome pde as Stratonovich, but for the general case of (x,t) dependent drift and diffusion coefficients!

an engaging survey of first-passage processes

An engaging survey of first passage time processes, highlighting interesting consequences, such as the nonmonotonic behavior of stochastic resonance and the application of first-passage methods to efficient simulation of diffusion-limited aggregation. The book assumes familiarity with diffusion, generating functions, Laplace transforms and asymptotics. Readers without that background will struggle with the derivations, but can appreciate the results. For example, the connection between discrete random walks and continuous diffusion are stated without much motivation in section 1.3.3. The provided references are good for mathematically oriented readers. Others could benefit from a more elementary presentation, e.g., Random Walks in Biology.

The book occasionally mentions significant extensions without even briefly describing their consequences. This is unfortunate since extensions such as the Orstein-Uhlenbeck process apply widely, e.g., to neuron models mentioned in the text as well as to finance (where an extended discussion would connect nicely with the stock market example described on the first page of the book).

The book is well-organized, but the index lacks common alternate names for processes mentioned in the text, such as "integrated Brownian motion", "Orstein-Uhlenbeck process" and "partially absorbing boundary condition".

The book would benefit from a summary of results to highlight in one place the relationships among the applications. Surveying open problems would make an interesting conclusion to this summary. The book could also use a table of notation, particularly since transforms are indicated by the name of arguments: e.g., for a discrete random walk, P(k,t) denotes the Fourier transform of the occupation probability P(n,t) to be at site n at time t, instead of the occupation probability at a different location k. This notation for transforms is handled consistently, but may confuse casual readers.

The more complicated derivations (not shown in the text) rely on Mathematica. It would be helpful to make the Mathematica files available on the book's web site so interested readers could see the details. The 2007 paperback edition has several pages of errata (which, surprisingly, are more recent than the list on the book's web site). While this list is helpful, it requires constantly checking while reading. I was surprised that the paperback edition did not correct the text.
