Macbeth the Graphic Novel: Plain Text, by William Shakespeare

The complete play translated into plain English. It's 11th century Scotland. Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is one of King Duncan's greatest war captains. Upon returning from a battle with the rebellious Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth and Banquo encounter three witches, who prophecy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then King. They also prophecy that Banquo will become the father of kings. When Lady Macbeth hears this, she is determined to push her husband to take fate into his own hands and make himself king by murdering Duncan. Macbeth is reluctant to harm Duncan. But, when the King makes arrangements to visit Macbeth's castle, the opportunity presents itself. Pressed on by his wife, Macbeth kills Duncan and blames the King's drunken attendants, who he also kills. However, Macbeth is racked with guilt and begins to see apparitions. When the body is discovered, Malcolm and Donalbain, the King's sons, are suspicious of Macbeth and flee for their lives. To everyone else, it looks as if the sons have been the chief conspirators and Macbeth is crowned King of Scotland. Banquo's suspicions grow, based on his encounter with the witches and Macbeth is wary of the second prophecy concerning Banquo's offspring. Macbeth hires assassins to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance. Banquo is murdered that night, but Fleance escapes. The bloody ghost of Banquo appears to Macbeth at a feast, tormenting his already guilty conscience. In addition, Macduff, once a comrade of Macbeth, has fled after the King's sons to England, as he also suspects Macbeth. In revenge, Macbeth butchers Macduff's entire household. Macduff and the King's sons raise an army in England and march against Macbeth, who is given another prophecy by the witches, as he prepares for the assault. They tell him his throne is safe until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane and he will not die by the hand of any man born of a woman. Macbeth now feels invincible. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, has been slowly driven mad by her dreams, in the wake of Duncan's murder. She sleepwalks and eventually kills herself. Macbeth learns that many of his lords are deserting and joining Malcolm's army, which approaches Dunsinane under cover of boughs, which they've cut from the trees of Birnam Wood. Macbeth and Macduff eventually meet on the bloody battlefield. Macbeth laughs derisively, relating the witches' prophecy. But Macduff retorts that he was from his mother's womb untimely ripp'd and not (technically) of woman born. The play ends with the death of Macbeth and Malcolm is crowned King of Scotland.

Review
"I'm fascinated by your approach to the play and its language. I find them gripping, dramatic and, although for me the original Shakespeare is always my reason for turning to these plays, I think that what you are doing in illuminating and making perhaps more lucid, especially for young people, is clever and meaningful." Patrick Stewart, Actor

About the Author
William Shakespeare is one of the most widely read authors and possibly the best dramatist ever to live. The actual date of his birth is not known but, traditionally, April 23 1564, has been his accepted birthday (St George's Day). He died on the same date in 1616, aged 52.The life of William Shakespeare can be divided into three acts. The first 20 years of his life were spent in Stratford-upon-Avon where he grew up, went to school, got married and became a father. The next 25 years he spent as an actor and playwright in London and he spent his last few years back in Stratford-upon-Avon where he enjoyed his retirement in moderate wealth gained from his successful years in the theatre.William was the eldest son of tradesman John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, and the third of eight children. His father was later elected mayor of Stratford which was the highest post a man in civic politics could attain. In sixteenth-century England, William was lucky to survive into adulthood; syphilis, scurvy, smallpox, tuberculosis, typhus and dysentery shortened life expectancy at the time to approximately 35 years. The Bubonic Plague took the lives of many and was believed to have taken the lives of three of William's seven siblings.Little is known of William's childhood other than it is thought that he attended the local grammar school where he studied Latin and English literature. In 1582, at the age of 18, William married a local farmer's daughter, Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior and three months pregnant. During their marriage they had three children: Susanna, born on May 26th 1583 and twins, Hamnet and Judith, born on February 2nd 1585. Hamnet, William's only son, caught Bubonic Plague and died aged just 11.Five years into his marriage William moved to London and appeared in many small parts at The Globe theatre, one of the biggest theatres in England. His first appearance in public as a poet was in 1593 with "Venus and Adonis" and again in the following year with "The Rape of Lucrece". Later on, in 1599, he became joint proprietor of The Globe. When Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, she was succeeded by her cousin King James of Scotland. King James supported William and his band of actors and gave them license to call themselves the "King's Men" in return for entertaining the court regularly. In just 23 years, between approximately 1590 and 1613, William Shakespeare is attributed with writing 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 5 poems. "Love's Labour's Lost" and "The Comedy of Errors" are thought to be among Shakespeare's earliest plays followed by "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" and "Romeo and Juliet". His final play was Henry VIII, two years before he died. The cause of his death remains unknown. He was buried on April 25th, two days after his death, at the Church of the Holy Trinity (the same Church where he had been baptised 52 years earlier). His gravestone bears these words (which it is believed William himself wrote):-"Good friend for Jesus sake forbearTo dig the dust enclosed here!Blest be the man that spares these stones,And curst be he that moves my bones"At the time of his death, William had substantial properties, which he bestowed on his family and associates from the theatre. In his will he left his wife, the former Anne Hathaway, his second best bed!William Shakespeare's last direct descendant died in 1670. She was his granddaughter, Elizabeth.

Outstanding and accessible
By Barry K
This is a brilliantly illustrated and faithfully rendered version of the classic play. The plain text is very close to the original, just easier for the modern reader to follow. The classic parts are unchanged. My teenagers grabbed the book as soon as they saw it and couldn't wait to take it to school. The artwork enhances the play, and if you can't get to a good production, this is a very good way to get an introduction.

This is a great way to get teens to want to read Macbeth. My teen was able to understand the play and complete all the assignments for his English class. The graphics were wonderful. I would highly recommend this to parents to help the student understand Shakespeare.

Robot Ethics: The Ethical and Social Implications of Robotics (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents series)From The MIT Press

Robots today serve in many roles, from entertainer to educator to executioner. As robotics technology advances, ethical concerns become more pressing: Should robots be programmed to follow a code of ethics, if this is even possible? Are there risks in forming emotional bonds with robots? How might society -- and ethics -- change with robotics? This volume is the first book to bring together prominent scholars and experts from both science and the humanities to explore these and other questions in this emerging field.

Starting with an overview of the issues and relevant ethical theories, the topics flow naturally from the possibility of programming robot ethics to the ethical use of military robots in war to legal and policy questions, including liability and privacy concerns. The contributors then turn to human-robot emotional relationships, examining the ethical implications of robots as sexual partners, caregivers, and servants. Finally, they explore the possibility that robots, whether biological-computational hybrids or pure machines, should be given rights or moral consideration.

Ethics is often slow to catch up with technological developments. This authoritative and accessible volume fills a gap in both scholarly literature and policy discussion, offering an impressive collection of expert analyses of the most crucial topics in this increasingly important field.

Review

The book is an excellent primer on ethics and philosophy. It is definitely accessible to an undergraduate student -- perhaps in the context of an undergraduate engineering ethics course. It is also a valuable reference for roboticists, providing an awareness of the social concerns related to their research.

Unnecessarily High Jargon-to-Content Ratio
By Courtney
Although this collection of chapters by disparate authors does give a flavor of the current state of thinking about robot ethics, it requires an unnecessarily intense effort by the reader. You will repeatedly slog through diagrams or technical jargon, only to realized that this was completely unnecessary to make the chapter's simple and usually obvious points. This is not the case for all of the chapters, but it is for enough of them to quickly become annoying. Also, to be frank, Robot Ethics, while still worth buying, contains too many chapters that would be uninteresting to anyone who already takes the Strong AI Hypothesis (that robots can become as intelligent and conscious as humans) for granted.
I believe, however, that this book would excel as a primer for research students who need to acquire a sense of what is and isn't publishable in the embryonic field of robot ethics.

If you're not a student, and you're merely looking for a survey on current thinking on robot morality, you might be better served by starting with Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right from Wrong by Wallach and Allen (who wrote Chapter 4 of Robot Ethics). They champion a bottom-up (i.e. training) approach to instilling ethics in robots. Or, for a top-down approach, try the considerately succinct Robot Nation: Surviving the Greatest Socio-Economic Upheaval of All Time by Neilson.

Higly readable coverage of an area of great current interest
By Bo Sanden
I wouldn't be aware of this book had I not served as a reader on a dissertation in the area of robot ethics. To an non-expert in the immediate field it provides what well-rounded coverage. It is surprisingly easy to read; only a couple of chapters come across as a little dry. As I went through it, I noted Blay Whitby's Chapter 15 as particularly strong; Steve Petersen's Chapter 18 as quite brilliant; Rob Sparrow's Chapter 19 as particularly interesting philosophically; and Anthony Beavers's Chapter 21 as a great discussion of whether it will be sufficient for robots merely to perform as thinking and caring entities while actually being neither in any real sense.

Most helpful book I've read as novice in the field
By James Carmine
This book actually changed my view of whether or not robots will some day become thinking machines and, more interestingly, regardless whether or not they actually do care about us whether we should treat them with some modicum of respect as if they did. If you want to begin to think seriously about Robot Ethics, this is the perfect place to begin. It would also work well as a text book in an ethics class.
