This cool, clear-sighted comparative study has no theological axe to grind. It offers a trusty thematic guide to the figureheads of three of the largest religions in the world.

  • The comparative approach is descriptive and even-handed, highlighting both similarities and differences across a range of major areas.
  • The thematic chapters cover: early life, followers, the core message, political attitudes, relations with women, and death.
  • The engaging writing and descriptive approach make this an ideal text for students, instructors and general readers.

Review

"Gwynne's judicious use of comparative method sheds light on each of the chosen subjects, who have rarely been treated together in this way, drawing on the three religions' own sources to give vivid accounts of their origins and contemporary relevance. It is the perfect antidote to the antagonistic atmosphere created by the 'New Atheism', but it also offers much food for thought as these three traditions dominate the world scene."
—John D'Arcy May, Trinity College Dublin and Australian Catholic University, Melbourne

From the Back Cover

This engaging and fascinating study compares the life and teaching of the Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad, the founders of three of the largest religions in the world. It explores how their lives, attitudes, and teachings, now followed by half of the world’s people, relate to one another.

Despite the vast literature on each figure, there are surprisingly few comparative studies, making this insightful book ideal for those studying comparative religion. The author’s descriptive and context-rich account illuminates key themes – political and historical, as well as religious – that established the impact and long-lasting effect of each figure. Fascinating similarities and differences are explored between the Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad, enriching our understanding and dispelling myths about both the individual figures and the nature of religion.

About the Author

Paul Gwynne is Lecturer in Comparative Religion in the General Education Program at the University of New South Wales, Australia, where he is also affiliated to the Law School. He has taught theology and religious studies in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, and Melbourne, Australia. Dr Gwynne is the author of World Religions in Practice: A Comparative Introduction (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), and Special Divine Action (1996).

Reading Pictures: What We Think About When We Look at Art, by Alberto Manguel

This profoundly illuminating, entertaining book could well change the way we "read" the visual world around us, and certainly help open our eyes and minds to its astonishing riches. The language in which we speak about art has become steadily more abstruse, a jargon that only art critics and con-artists can understand, though for thousands of years this was not the case. Today, we live in a kaleidoscopic new world of images: Is there a vocabulary we can learn in order to read these images? Is there something we can do so as not to remain passive when we flip through an illustrated book, or download images on a screen? Are there ways in which we can "read" the stories within paintings, monuments, buildings and sculptures? We say "every picture tells a story" - but does it?

Taking a handful of extraordinary images - photographed, painted, built, sculpted - Alberto Manguel explores how each one attempts to tell a story that we, the viewer, must decipher or invent. A History of Love and Hate is not about art history or theory - it is about the astonishing pleasures and surprises of stories.

Review
"Alberto Manguel is an expert explorer of what the French call the imaginaire -- a word that combines imagination, imagery and the formation of images in the mind. He is the author of a very practical Dictionary of Imaginary Places. His History of Reading is a brilliant account of the ways in which reader and writer meet and change each other. He understands the logic of Lewis Carroll's world of wonderland and mirrors better than almost anyone else. His own imagination is supple and generous, and his work is full of surprises…. he is in fact someone who works accurately and idiosyncratically in ordinary language, to our delight.… Each chapter ranges widely and sure-footedly around its chosen subject, using Manguel's wide learning to make new connections.…It is the scrupulous, high-powered conversation of a learned man, rather than professional "criticism," and the better for it….his own reflections, so unconstricted, so clear, so strange, are so very satisfying to his readers." -- A.S. Byatt, Washington Post, Sunday, October 28, 2001

“As a teacher, [Manguel] is profound and unpredictable, world-wise and erudite…. The artists Manguel chooses are surprising and fresh, and his sidetracks occasionally ignore standard biography. But the book provides plenty of appropriate visual images -- only some of them familiar -- alongside lovely, compassionate sentences.” -- Quill & Quire, starred review, December 2000

“Quite the most entrancing aspect of this rich, venturesome book is its authors humility in the face of all he knows and his generosity in sharing it with us.” --The Spectator

“This delightful book will fascinate anyone who enjoys looking at pictures….In his charmingly calm, unruffled way, Manguel forces you to reexamine your own assumptions and convictions about art. This is a book to cherish.” --The Sunday Telegraph

Not what I expected, but not without merit
By Caleb Hanson
This book wasn't exactly what I expected when I bought it--Amazon recommended it based on my previous purchases, and it looked interesting so I went for it. I had hoped it would be about how *I* could get more out of looking at art, but really it's about what Manguel thinks about when *he* looks at a dozen particular pieces--paintings mostly, but also photographs, sculpture, monuments, etc.

My mis-expectations aside, he does know stuff and he writes it well. Each chapter is an essay about one piece; some talk about the composition of the piece, others more about the artist's career as a whole, others about other things that the piece reminds Manguel of. I was a bit disappointed that the rather interesting picture on the cover is never even mentioned, neither the photo nor the painting within it.

Not easy to rate: not what I was looking for, but interesting enough I finished reading it, but then again I don't know the field so I can't really tell if he's full of it or not. Hence the indecisive three stars. (Takeaway lesson: Picasso was an incredible dick.)

American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel, by Neil Gaiman

First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic—an intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman.

A storm is coming . . .

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.

Amazon.com Review
American Gods is Neil Gaiman's best and most ambitious novel yet, a scary, strange, and hallucinogenic road-trip story wrapped around a deep examination of the American spirit. Gaiman tackles everything from the onslaught of the information age to the meaning of death, but he doesn't sacrifice the razor-sharp plotting and narrative style he's been delivering since his Sandman days.

Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow's dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost--the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book.

Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow's road story is the heart of the novel, and it's here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book--the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. "This is a bad land for Gods," says Shadow.

More than a tourist in America, but not a native, Neil Gaiman offers an outside-in and inside-out perspective on the soul and spirituality of the country--our obsessions with money and power, our jumbled religious heritage and its societal outcomes, and the millennial decisions we face about what's real and what's not. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Titans clash, but with more fuss than fury in this fantasy demi-epic from the author of Neverwhere. The intriguing premise of Gaiman's tale is that the gods of European yore, who came to North America with their immigrant believers, are squaring off for a rumble with new indigenous deities: "gods of credit card and freeway, of Internet and telephone, of radio and hospital and television, gods of plastic and of beeper and of neon." They all walk around in mufti, disguised as ordinary people, which causes no end of trouble for 32-year-old protagonist Shadow Moon, who can't turn around without bumping into a minor divinity. Released from prison the day after his beloved wife dies in a car accident, Shadow takes a job as emissary for Mr. Wednesday, avatar of the Norse god Grimnir, unaware that his boss's recruiting trip across the American heartland will subject him to repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife and brutal roughing up by the goons of Wednesday's adversary, Mr. World. At last Shadow must reevaluate his own deeply held beliefs in order to determine his crucial role in the final showdown. Gaiman tries to keep the magical and the mundane evenly balanced, but he is clearly more interested in the activities of his human protagonists: Shadow's poignant personal moments and the tale's affectionate slices of smalltown life are much better developed than the aimless plot, which bounces Shadow from one episodic encounter to another in a design only the gods seem to know. Mere mortal readers will enjoy the tale's wit, but puzzle over its strained mythopoeia. (One-day laydown, June 19)Forecast: Even when he isn't in top form, Gaiman, creator of the acclaimed Sandman comics series, trumps many storytellers. Momentously titled, and allotted a dramatic one-day laydown with a 12-city author tour, his latest will appeal to fans and attract mainstream review coverage for better or for worse because of the rich possibilities of its premise.

From Library Journal
In his latest novel, Gaiman (Neverwhere) explores the vast and bloody landscape of myths and legends where the gods of yore and the neoteric gods of now conflict in modern-day America. The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. Gaiman is an exemplary short story writer, but his ventures into novels are also compellingly imaginative. Highly recommended for all libraries. Ann Kim, "Library Journal"

I decided I'd better read it
By BBoop
My husband wanted me to read this book for years. I never picked it up. After seeing a preview for the upcoming series, I decided I'd better read it.
I was not disappointed or led astray with my husbands high praise of this book.
As a lover of mythology my whole life, this book was right up my alley and then some.
I loved the characters. I was totally snowed by the plot.
This, for me, was one of those books I felt intense sadness when I reached the final page.
I loved the storytelling vibe of the writing.
Great read. Can't wait for the show and supposedly there's a book two in the works? Can't wait!

4.5 Stars
By SueAnnna68
It took me awhile to get through this book. I started it became engrossed in it then shelved it for a bit. But I kept coming back to it and eventually couldn't put it down. There were parts I reread and highlighted, and actually read aloud to myself. I don't think I know how to properly review American Gods. It is one of those books I know I will read again and take something different from it each time.

A mythical road trip through a Faulkner-like America
By Juli
I didn't read the book when it came out so I just ended up buying the 10th anniversary edition. The story is great. I read it slowly, savoring each subplot (and there are lots of them). I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan and besides Neverwhere, this is now my other favorite book of his. This edition also contains tons of extra stuff, an interview with him, an additional foreword by him, an excerpt to another Neil Gaiman novel, and a book club discussion section. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

The Way of Trust and Love - A Retreat Guided by St. Therese of Lisieux, by Jacques Philippe

St. Thrse of Lisieux sought a new way to Heaven: “a little way that is quite straight, quite short: a completely new little way.” Blessed with personal limitations that might have discouraged another, Thrse believed God would not have given her a desire for holiness if He did not intend for her to achieve it. She learned to humbly accept herself as she was and trust completely in God’s love.

First given as a retreat by renowned author Father Jacques Philippe, The Way of Trust and Love navigates excerpts of St. Thrse’s writings phrase by phrase, extracting powerful, resonating insights. To Thrse, the journey seemed “little” as she traveled it. A hundred and fifteen years after her death, the message of the young saint and Doctor of the Church has traveled around the world inspiring millions. With this newly translated study of her spirituality, many today will rediscover—or find for the first time—the relevance of “the little way,” in all seasons of life.

Fr. Jacques Philippe is well-known for his books on prayer and spirituality. A member of the Community of the Beatitudes, he regularly preaches retreats in France and abroad. He also spends much of his time giving spiritual direction and working for the development of the Community in Asia and Oceania where he travels frequently.

Another treasure by Jacques Philippe
By Lorraine V. Murray
This beautifully written book allows you to take a simple retreat at home. The author takes a fresh and insightful look at a beloved saint, who had the rare grace of seeing the Gospel through new eyes. For those who struggle with trusting God, or battle anxiety or gloominess, or sometimes sink into doubt, this book points the way. We all have limitations and we all face discouragement, but Father Jacques Philippe masterfully shows how St. Therese of Lisieux can help us navigate a sea of spiritual dangers and reach a safe shore.

Really Captures The Little Way
By Jennifer G. Miller
My favorite book over the years has been "I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Thrse of Lisieux by Father Jean C. J. d'Elbe. Father Philippe shares his retreat notes on a similar vein, and in a shorter amount of time really captures and goes deeper than Father d'Elbe. I have come to love all the books by Father Philippe for his gift of zeroing right to essential. He is practical, simple, short but all very applicable and wise. Highly recommended!

Way of Trust & Love
By nical
Fabulous book. I was a little uncertain about buying it, as it said it was written specifically for those on a retreat and I thought it might be structured in such a way as to make it difficult to 'just read'. However, there were no problems on that score. Nearly every paragraph gave me food for thought and I immediately started rereading it as soon as I finished it - something I rarely do. Jacques Philippe is a splendid spiritual writer and like "Interior Freedom", another book of his that I thoroughly enjoy and have reread many times, I know this book will give me food for thought for quite some time.

The Official History of the Falklands Campaign, Volume 2: War and Diplomacy (Government Official History Series), by Lawrence Freedman

In the second volume of his official history of the Falklands Campaign, Lawrence Freedman provides a detailed and authoritative account of one of the most extraordinary periods in recent British political history and a vivid portrayal of a government at war.

After the shock of the Argentine invasion of the Falklands in April 1982, Margaret Thatcher faced the crisis that came to define her premiership as she determined to recover the islands. The book covers all aspects of the campaign - economic and diplomatic as well as military - demonstrating the extent of the gamble that the government took.

There are important accounts of the tensions in relations with the United States, concerns among the military commanders about the risks they were expected to take, the problems of dealing with the media and the attempts to reach a negotiated settlement. This definitive account describes in dramatic detail events such as the sinking of the Belgrano, the Battle of Goose Green and the final push to Stanley. Special attention is also paid to the aftermath of the war, including the various enquiries, and the eventual restoration of diplomatic relations with Argentina.

This paperback edition has been updated, corrected and contains some new material.

Review

'a masterpiece of even-handed scholarship, and will undoubtedly remain the definitive word on the conflict.’

Dominic Sandbrook, Daily Telegraph

‘Freedman is not just a good historian but a terse, readable writer. This is a fine book about modern war, warts and all, in an age when such evenly balanced conflicts are rare.’

Simon Jenkins, Sunday Times

‘Freedman has the rare gift of offering both strategic guidance and a fine grasp of tactical details.’
Jeremy Black

‘In Lawrence Freedman, the campaign has found an impeccable chronicler’
Max Hastings, Sunday Telegraph

‘Official this history certainly is, and something more. But is it definitive, critics may cry? With its personal panache and incisiveness, it is better than that – at least for this critic.' Robert Fox, Evening Standard

‘fascinating, balanced, fantastically well-researched and well-written.’ Andrew Roberts, New Statesman

'I highly recommend both volumes ... a must-have for serious students of this period', The Northern Mariner

Good insight into British government perceptions and challenges
By mrstupid
Contrary to what some might think, this book doesn't make a strong case for the British position in the Falklands War. Charges of "bias" suggest either a failure to actually read through the book or an emotionally-charged interpretation that "because the British were wrong, then anything they say is wrong". The author makes clear that the intention of the book isn't to buttress the British position on sovereignty over the Falklands, but instead he wants to relate the British government's issues and decision-making, particularly in regards to foreign office and defense officials. The author reviews the major sovereignty arguments from both the Argentine and British sides and notes the strengths and weaknesses of each side in a relatively even-handed way. He does not promote a blatantly nationalistic nor populist view, but rather takes a somewhat legalistic tone, although it may be tempting for some to accuse him of equivocating. He then goes on to show how the British position evolved and how British officials grappled with the incompatibilities between their domestic priorities, Argentine priorities and impersonal strategic imperatives.

Whether or not there were more nefarious, e.g. "imperialist", motives behind other British institutions or society at large lies beyond the scope of the book.

American English speakers would do well to take note of differences in certain common phrases between British and common American usage. For example, "paid off" in British officialdom can mean to finish the use of an asset as opposed to the colloquial American usage, which means to finish payment for an asset over an implied period, resulting in full ownership of the asset.

A dispassionate recounting of Argentine government decision-making and political pressures would provide an ideal counterpart to this book and its subsequent volume, especially to students of foreign policy.

Falkland island war 1982
By K.Schneider
This is a very hard read it is two volumes written by the British. So it is there Officeal History am sure certain parties will take offense.

I read it in another manner. It is about two countries locked in battle. I have read many books on the war and I found this to be very well written with alot of information.

You need time to read it and you must have a good basic idea of the war and all the players and units to tie it all together.
This book isnt for the average person, but for those who love and understand military history.
