Fantastic zombie versus young adults to save the human race

Great read with fun characters working against all odds to kill zombies and figure out how the virus has made some people superhuman-like vampires.
The main hero is a strong female battling zombies, vampires, and heartache while keeping an entire company focused. I liked the relationship between our hero and her love interest(perfectly innocent young love) as they make serious decisions with very little communication with the rest of the country in an apocalyptic world.
Easy reading as you learn the characters are derived from their interests or background. Rooting for them to succeed kept me from putting this novel down. After reading the twist I was left wanting more from these kids! Curious how they would proceed next to restart civilization.
I liked the scientific side of the virus mutating and how they try to figure its mechanism to save humanity while staying alive in such difficult situations. A lot of gun and sword battles are well written along with good character interactions. Anxious to see if this author Susanne will continue the series.

Fun Read

This is a new twist on the supernatural scene. I love that she has created a new type of supernatural being and has pulled in more than just one group. Using kids/teens as the heros and villains, is great. This book shows the author has a very creative mind, just when I think I know where she is going, she throws me curve (in a good way) that has me seeing everything I just read in a totally different light. With her descriptions of the town/compound and surrounding areas, you are really able to visualize what you are reading. I think her book would make a great TV serious. I would watch it. I am ready for the next book to come out. Don't let the "haters" of your book bring you down. Keep writing for those of us who enjoy a good read.

Fun and Morbid!

Morbid Hearts was an enjoyable read from the beginning. There’s tons of action, and the story doesn’t really stop for any breathers. It’s morbid, which I like. And there was even a scene that had me gasping and re-reading! I enjoyed this novel because it isn’t your typical zombie story. It seems to gather all kinds of folklore and wrap them all together into one seamless story. Nothing really seems out of place, and it all pulls together in the end and leaves you interested to keep along with the series. The characters are all unique with different personalities and jobs, all being teenagers. And though I’m not usually into young adult characters or kids, this story really did a good job at portraying the characters. These kids had to grow up fast and learn to survive in the sudden conditions they were thrust into. In a lawless world consumed by zombies, the interactions and battles between the characters seemed realistic and logical. Overall, Morbid Hearts is a new take on the zombie franchise, has interesting young characters, and fun plot twists that will keep you interested throughout. Great read! I’d recommend it to anyone who loves zombies and anything along the lines of mythical creatures, horror, and has a morbid sense of humor.

John Emms is a Grandmaster and has captained the English Team at two Chess Olympiads. He's an experienced coach who has worked with many top players, including World Championship finalist Michael Adams. He's also a highly respected chess writer, with many outstanding works to his name.

Great Opening Survey

This is a very high quality repertoire book. Unlike some repertoires that try to cover every response to 1.e4 in far too few pages, this one, of course is only a response to 1...e5. So the coverage is very thorough, more thorough than any non-master would likely ever need to be successful. Plus, the author, English GM John Emms, is a rather exceptional author, very adept at explaining chess concepts for the developing player. The repertoire chosen is a very good one for anyone from developing player all the way up to GM. He chooses the Italian game, but by way of the Bishop's Opening move order, 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4. In this way you can avoid the Petroff Defense, which is both popular and difficult for White to demonstrate an advantage against. Plus, everyone who plays 1...e5 will be booked up against the Spanish and Scotch openings, but the Italian Game is not as popular. This is an especially good place for developing players to start, as the strategies are less taxing than in the Spanish, or even the Scotch, and you will learn classical tactical themes that will serve you for your whole chess career. Emms chooses the modern treatment of the Italian Game, one in which White delays castling. The Two Knights and other lines are covered as well. The format is not a variation tree, but the repertoire is instead given in 46 well chosen games. Unless you are a titled player, reviewing whole games will do more for your chess than trying to memorize countless variation trees. The vast majority of the games are fairly recent, post 2000 games. Emms is very thorough at giving alternate move orders and alternate lines. He is also very objective about the opening. There is no empty 'White to Play and Win' tripe here. He notes that there are lines where Black is equal, but also truly points out that if you understand these positions better than your opponent, you can still play for a win. I find this honesty quite refreshing! There is enough material in this book to give titled players a repertoire, but the copious verbal explanations make the book usable for non-masters as well. Truly, this book is a labor of love, and vastly superior to the kind of opening book that was so common 20 or 30 yrs ago. Highly recommended.

Another gem by Emms

Emms is my favorite chess author, hands down. I would know absolutely nothing about the modern chess era without Emm's opening books. In fact, after reading his books on the Nimzo Indian and Taiminov Sicilian, I now play those openings almost exclusively. I plan to also play the italian after reading this book in full too. I feel like I'm stealing his entire repertoire, but he explains things so well, its hard not to. Does he play this opening? Yes, he says since 2000, as a companion to the Ruy Lopez. As a rule I don't buy opening books unless the writer practices what they preach.

The meat of this book is about the "Italian" (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4) and the "Bishops Opening" (1.e4 e5 2. Bc4), the latter has the advantage as you don't have to prepare for the Petroff (2...Nf6) or center counter (1...d5). But regardless, as much of its transpositional, the ideal setup is based on 1.e4, Nf3, Bc4-b3, c3, d3, Nbd2-f1-g3, Qe2 with usually an assault on the black king, depending on Blacks play of course. The d3 idea (instead of d4) became popular in the 80's and 90's, with many top flight GM's playing it. I have to admit I haven't played the Italian since I started playing chess 15 years ago, and of course I played it wrongly, but later noticed several lines with white's c3-d4 that lead to full equality. I never thought about c3, d3 , so called the "Quiet Italian" (even though its not so quiet in many lines) keeping the center unresolved for awhile. It happens to be the main line today, so this isn't offbeat stuff. The added benefit is your opponent rarely sees the Italian and usually not the quiet one. Can it lead to equality? Sure, but like many other openings, only if your opponent knows as much as you do about the opening!

I recommend it highly if you were like me stuck in a rut on whites opening choice and don't want to learn reams of theory on the Ruy Lopez. This book comes with FULL games and expert analysis of recent GM games, so its an enjoyable read! Five stars and recommended highly.

This book explains clearly many of the most typical ideas in the Italian game with c3 and d3 set up.
Three things you should consider about the book:
1) Focus is on building a repertoire for white so that not all main lines are covered. On the other side the material easier to navigate and digest.
2) Comments win over analysis. Not too many lengthy variations but a few well chosen reference games with very good explanation of the key strategic ideas for both colours (although mainly by white perspective). I prefer this approach to the opposite one. I tend to lose myself and forget the key contents when the message is left to tons of copy-pasted computer analysis without comments
3) The author is playing the lines he suggests. This knowledge of the opening is well reflected in the organization of the material.
I gave it 5 stars because I keep coming back to it eager to continue the reading. This is quite rare for me with chess books. I guess it's because it's very well written.

384 pages of detailed, gorgeous superhero art work.

Fans of comic artist Alex Ross enjoy his detailed and highly realistic art work, and here they are in for a major treat, for JUSTICE dishes out a non stop, superlative serving of his best work from cover to cover. Expect to see some serious superhero action with the Legion of Doom, led by Lex Luthor and Braniac pitted against the heroes from Justice League of America, including Superman, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and many, many more.

This edition covers JUSTICE no. 1 to 12 and is a definite bang for your buck, housed in a sturdy hard cover.

This book collects the #5-8 of the ongoing Jusitce maxi-series written by Jim krueger (Earth X) and illustrated by Doug Braithwaite and Alex Ross.

The story picks up immediately after volume one of Justice where the JLA is systemetically being taken apart. The heroes begin to somewhat regain their footing but the battle is far from over. We find out that there is even a bigger play on hand than what appears. Batman is being mind-controlled, so are several members of the JLA. But thorugh the intervention of second tier or reserve JLA members such as Captain Marvel, the heroes narrowly escape the clutches of the Legion of Doom. And speaking of Captain Marvel, he has a prominent presence in this book. His powers and representation here is very similar to that in another story, Kingdom Come (which should come as no surprise). But not soon have the heroes regained their composure do they find out that their loved ones, i.e. Aquaman's son have been kidnapped. The battle lines have been drawn and the JLA and Legion of Doom are ready to go at it, which one can assume will take place in the next volume...and I for one can't wait.

The art team continues their excellent work. I love the scenes where Captain Marvel swoops in to save Superman and with the ease he disposes of Bizzaro, Metallo, Parasite and Grundy. Since, Parasite took Superman's strength, he also gained his weaknesses and Capt. Marvel exploits that by ripping out Metallo's kryptonite heart and using it against Parasite...awesome. I also liked the little banter that Superman had with Capt. Marvel after they recues the Flash whose own metabolism is killing him.

Superman: Do you have any money on you?

Capt. Marvel: Billy has maybe ten bucks, why?

Supes: Barry has to eat. An there's an all-you-can-eat buffet about 50 miles from here. It's $5.99. I hate asking...but my wallet got burned up when you threw me into the sun.

Capt.: This is going to be unfair to the buffet, isn't it?

Like I said, the writing is great.

As a bonus feature of sorts, the book features an intro by Doug Braithwaite which was very poignant. He writes about how he read the JLA as a kid and has the same enthusiasm as he pencils Justice. There is also more files of of profiles presented for heoroes and villains from Batman's computer. You also get a look at several pencilled pages.

In case it didn't coem through, I love this book. The way the story is written is vintage Superfriends type cartoon which has been matured to certain extent. It's an excellent read and I am very enthusiactic to see how it will end. So, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You won't regret it.

Fun, but collapses under its own weight

JUSTICE is a difficult book for me to review, as I have such mixed feelings about it - perhaps more so than any other comic. Conceived by Alex Ross, it brings in co-writer Jim Krueger and penciller Doug Braithwaite to present what is essentially the Super Friends vs. The Legion of Doom, albeit with a much darker tone than the Saturday morning cartoon. Over the years, Ross has proven himself to be not only a spectacular artist, but a pretty good idea man. When those ideas were developed by writers such as Kurt Busiek and Mark Waid, the results could be brilliant; however, Ross' collaborations with Krueger have resulted in unfocused and drawn-out stories that don't seem to know when to end. Based on that, I had planned on avoiding this 12-issue limited series, but a free copy of the softcover edition changed that.

The story begins with the destruction of the Earth, despite the best efforts of the Justice League. It is slowly revealed that this is a dream shared by the League's enemies, apparently foreshadowing a great disaster brought about by Earth's over-reliance on its heroes. As a result, the villains decide to use their substantial powers to solve world problems and empower humanity. Utopia appears to be at hand, but at the heart of it, the heroes know that something isn't right. The compromising of their secret identities and subsequent attempts on their lives lead them to uncover an insidious plan that, frankly, only ended up confusing me.

At the heart of JUSTICE is Alex Ross' love of the Super Friends, and as such, we get classic '70s versions of our favorite heroes and villains; not just the core Super Friends, but also supporting members, as well as the Doom Patrol and the Metal Men. The characterizations are excellent, and the creators do get some neat ideas onto the page. Unfortunately, these various bits are mired in a tedious narrative that ups the ante at every turn, so that by the time I reached chapter 8, I was ready for the story to end. There are so many ways in which Krueger and Ross could have streamlined this story, eliminating some dead ends and tightening the plodding conclusion. Artwise, it's difficult to appreciate Braithwaite's contribution. He is an accomplished artist in his own right, and I'm a huge fan of his, so it would have been nice if his style weren't completely hidden by Ross' paints. On the other hand, Braithwaite's jarring and awkward layouts really make it difficult to follow what's happening. Cuts between scenes are not handled well - they are extremely abrupt, to the point that I had to constantly go back to make sure that I hadn't missed a page. Some objective oversight of this project might have helped to smooth things out, but I guess editors are hesitant to say "no" when Ross is involved.

I can't help but to compare the overall product with the grand mess that is Marvel's Secret Wars, as there are numerous similarities between the two (even the toys!), but with JUSTICE, I at least enjoyed the better part of the ride. This was such an ambitious project, and it does fare much better than most of Krueger and Ross' collaborations, but ultimately, JUSTICE comes across as an indulgent pet project of the creators, rather than something done for the readers.

The Indian National Congress believed that supporting Britain s war efforts would benefit India's move towards independence. As a result, over a million Indian men were deployed to fight for the British. Post the war, Britain's refusal to grant India home rule created hostility among the Indians towards them. This dissent eventually paved way for the Indian independence movement, which was to emerge later.

For the first time India's contribution to the First World War is carefully documented with details of the different theaters in which Indian soldiers took part. In addition, the authors also examine the unsettling encounters the Indian soldiers had with Europe and European culture. What did the war mean for the political climate in India? What was it like for the Indian soldiers to fight a war they were unprepared for? Using first hand accounts such as letters home, documents from the various army archives and incredible photographs, the authors reconstruct the story of a war which was as much India's as it was Britain's.

About the Author
Vedica Kant holds an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford, where her thesis focused on pan-Islamic movements in the Middle East and South Asia during the Cold War. She also has a BSc in Economics and Political Science from Singapore Management University. Vedica has written widely on Turkish and South Asian history, politics and culture including for The Turkish Review, The Majalla, Asharq Al-Awsat, Live Mint, The Sunday Guardian and The National Geographic Traveller. In addition to working on the history of the Indian involvement in the First World War, she is also contributing to a chapter on the remembrance of the First World War in Turkey to an edited volume Remembering the First World War to be published by Routledge UK. Vedica is a native speaker of both English and Hindi, is proficient in Urdu and Turkish, and has a basic knowledge of French.
