Born in Hong Kong to parents who immigrated there from the Toishan region of mainland China, Elaine Mar came to America in 1972, when she was not quite 6. Colorado was quite a shock to a girl who had previously shared a five-room apartment with four other families. "She must be rich," Man Yee (her Chinese name) thought, emerging from the basement room where she and her parents slept to explore her Aunt Becky's three-bedroom house in a working-class Denver neighborhood. Not so: her aunt, father, and other relatives worked in the kitchen of a restaurant owned by others, and Mar's pungent memoir of her odyssey from poor immigrant to Harvard undergraduate shatters stereotypes about Asians as the "model minority." She was a smart girl and a good student who soon preferred the American name Elaine and "only spoke Chinese when absolutely necessary," but she found it hard to decipher the "cultural cues" on which social success in school depended. Honestly chronicling conflicts with her parents, whose horizons and expectations seemed unbearably limited, Mar outlines her youthful rebellion and their response with mature understanding. Asked by her third grade teacher to tell the class "what it's like being Chinese," Mar stumbled for a moment and answered, "Um, I like it, I guess." Her plainly told memoir, which recounts her passage from life in a crowded Hong Kong tenement to being a Harvard graduate, is the longer answer to her teacher's na?ve question. Opening the book with her first memory (the crunch of chicken bones between her teeth), Mar goes on to depict, with a strained simplicity, her arrival in Denver at the age of five and the difficulties of dealing with the competing demands of her traditionally minded parents and her new American peers. For Mar, being from Hong Kong is not all firecrackers and dragon dances, though she assures her classmates that these are weekly pleasures there. In elementary school, her greatest desire is to "obscure" her "foreignness." Nightly, she peers into the mirror, pinching at her face, hoping to shape her nose into something narrower and more "American." Rather than delve into the motivations of those around her, Mar often attempts to preserve the confusion she experienced as a child: "I didn't understand anything about America. In Hong Kong, everybody liked me. Now no one did." The result is a curiously shallow look at her life. She closes the book with an epilogue summarizing her years at college during which the breach between her and her parents widened. Amazing story, great read

I had to choose a book off of a list for my graduate cross and chose this one. Best pick ever. The author draws you into her story about her immigration into America from Hong Kong and I was able to relate to her experiences in so many ways, despite being born an American. I love her writing and details and how she incorporates her first language and culture seamlessly with her story, without making it a history or course lesson. I laughed and cried and wished I could speak with her today, that's how amazing I found the book. I love to read, and have to read often for school and because I'm a teacher. I recommend this book to everyone because of how powerful the story is, no matter what your background or reason for reading.

Lonely daughter, sad heart

From the first page, this moving memoir captures the essence of the transplanted life of a jook-kok, a Chinese-American child born in the old country. Born in Hong Kong, Elaine (her "American" name) immigrates to the United States when she is five years old. All her early childhood memories, the safety of a poor but well-ordered life are based on the identity and acceptance of her Hong Kong relatives.
In America, Elaine's nuclear family lives with her father's sister and her family in Denver, Colorado. Most of this extended family works long, ardous hours in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, preparing "Chinese" food and washing dishes. With the adults engaged in economic survival, Elaine and her young cousin, San, spend many hours supervised by Elaine's non-English speaking mother.
The most painful hours of Elaine's life are spent in school. She enters first grade with few language skills, unable to express herself adequately. Unable, as well, to defend herself against the taunts of the children, who call her "chink" and "slant-eyes". Gradually, as her command of language improves, as well as comprehension of American social nuances, Elaine begins to blend in with her classmates. With the longing of a child's heart, she is thrust daily into the fractured world of Chinese vs American. In spite of the painful solitude Elaine endures, she retains a strong sense of self, blindly reaching to make her life tolerable. Her mother will never comprehend the daughter's suffering, she has her own pain, and there are no Chinese words for what the child is experiencing.
This is a heartbreaking story of culture shock and self-survival. Elaine's acceptance in America depends upon her ability to adapt, to read the signs of her environment. Ultimately, her life is split in half, between Chinese and American. She makes difficult choices, at the cost of her Chinese heart. She has written this memoir to reclaim that heart, and to tell her family she has not forgotten. But they cannot read English words and she is forever outside the embrace of her two cultures. In the last sentence, M. Elaine Mar tells us, "Like my grandfather, I'd immigrated, with no way to send for my family."

lyrical writing, moving story

This book is a wonderful read for two reasons. First, the book is written in such a way that you feel like you're having a conversation with the author. And secondly, the book is not a chronological review of the author's life events. Rather, she takes specific instances from her life that give you the essence of what her growing up was like, the feel, the taste, the texture. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Very good intro

This book covers an incredible range of topics - from scripting to graphics to using the GPIO pins. It is clear and easy to read with only a few minor typos. All of the code in the book is also available on the web site which saves a lot of typing.

If I had one complaint it would be that the book is truly an introduction in the first few chapters but seems to get a little thinner on the details later on in the book. For example, it spends a good bit of time explaining basic programming concepts such as syntax and logical constructs. And for most of the chapters it describes what is happening in the code line-for-line. But in the chapter on GPIO programming it says not to worry about how the function interacting with the hardware operates. This would have been a very good place to go into a lot of detail.

Very good Python introduction, limited Pi info

Learning Python with Raspberry Pi is a good Python beginner book and gets you started step by step with general computer knowledge followed by step by step programming. Software projects are multi platform which is good but very little is offered on utilizing the special functions or the Pi platform. There is a good amount of information about the Pi hardware and how it works but I expected to have see some good hardware interface programming examples to get started with a Python Pi hardware project instead of so much time on graphics which is prettly limited on the Pi platform.

Since it isn't listed in the product description I will post the Table of Contents which is available in the "Click to Look Inside" preview so it is easier to reference.

Book is OK but feel it is a little pricey.

Bought this book as an amazon ebook. Currently working through the programming exercises. It is relatively easy to follow and the examples are definitely interesting and fun. Examples use mostly API python modules for coding. It is always amazing how little code it can take to create a fully functional application using api components. The web browser app surprised me and works quite well. The writer certainly knows his stuff. The example code can be downloaded to save time but I like to manually enter the code, since you learn by doing. It also helps you understand error messages and how to fix typos, indent or syntax errors. I tend to miss colon's and have learned to watch more carefully when coding. The only complaint would be that I found the book a little pricey considering it was an ebook. I feel the publishers (not necessarily Amazon) are gouging the public by over pricing. I would have felt better buying the ebook directly from the author (eg self published through Amazon) knowing that he would get most of the profits instead of middle men overpricing, taking a large cut and leaving the author with a small fraction.

Enlightening Accounts of Narcissism, Histrionic and Borderline Personality Disorders

If only there was a 6 STAR Rating! Reading this book was an incredibly validating experience. I believe that this book is essential for daughters of narcissistic mothers. Such mothers simply do not have the capacity to ever be warm, loving, or empathetic. I have read many books on narcissist personality disorder. The difference with this book is that it is written from a first hand experience and includes very specific situations and events between the narcissistic mother and the "still" seeking daughter. In reading this book I must have said, “Me too” hundreds of times and was not so shocked to be able to check off every single sign of narcissism that was listed within the book (manipulations, lies, games played, sudden fake illnesses, inconsistencies, pitting siblings against each other, attempting to turn your father against you, acting as a completely different person amongst non immediate family members, pretending to be religious yet acting evil, giving absolute priority to those outsiders who would praise her)! It was also interesting to see how many family members become enablers and victims out of need, and others even continue the cycle within their own families.

This book explains that daughters of narcissistic mothers may be subject to projection, extreme jealousy, and envy because you are viewed as her extension (or shadow). It finally confirms what you may have sensed already or had been told by others whom you have a loving relationship with. This is a must read! Learn to move on and realize that it is not about you! As explained it is usually passed on from generation to generation. Break the cycle if you are now a Mother and want to show your own children what true unconditional love is. Once one has their own family they truly realize what genuine love is, and that placing your children's needs before your own is priority. This book is a true awakening for anyone who has dealt with this issue. There is no need to blame someone who is suffering from a mental illness as described in the DSM. There is no need for one to feel obligated to be a part of a passive-aggressive battleground, with a narcissistic mother as the ring-master. It gives a new perspective, and arms the reader with knowledge that gives the tools to become the authentic “me” as well as how to recognize destructive relationship behaviors due to growing up with a narcissistic mother - and to change its course when it rears its head. I actually have been in contact with the author, and have found her personal insight to be extremely enlightening. Read this book and move on with living a happy, liberating and emotionally healthy life!!

Recognized myself

This is one of the best books on parental narcissism I've read since discovering, only a few months ago, that it is a personality disorder on my mother's part that's our problem, not my own inability to form a close, healthy mother-daughter relationship with my mother. For decades I'd been struggling to figure out how to create peace in our interactions, how to not wind up in pointless, frustrating arguments with my mother.
I was so relieved when I read about others going through the same thing and to be told to let go of my fruitless efforts. I was sad, too, because it means saying good-bye to any hope that there will ever be a good and close mother-daughter relationship between us. With a true narcissist that's just not possible. This book helped me understand that those feelings of sadness and frustration are common, normal and, unfortunately, unavoidable. It gave me comfort to read examples of interactions I recognized. I found myself saying out loud things like "exactly", "that's what she does", "that's what I do" and "yes, that's what it feels like".
I particularly found the part about how to deal with aging narcissists helpful, as I am currently living next door to my mother who is 79, trying to meet her needs without exhausting myself emotionally.

The best book on fixing problems with narcissistic parents

I agree with all the 5-star reviews here. Tina Fuller's book is excellent. Not only does she provide a method on how to determine whether your parent is narcissistic, but she also has a method to help her readers deal with it. I appreciated that the book was concise but comprehensive. I also appreciated that it was personal, and that she included stories and personal examples of how she has dealt with a toxic mother. The point of her P.A.C.E method is to protect yourself, accept the situation, change your interactions, and empower yourself. It's simple and effective.

From reading Fuller's descriptions, it's clear that she knows exactly what she's talking about. People who have been raised by these kinds of parents know what I mean. And yes, no one who hasn't experienced narcissistic parenting can truly understand it. We children of narcissistic parents have all heard, "But those are the only parents you have!" Or "they only want what's best for you!" Normal people just don't understand that not all parents want what's best for their kids. I'm saying this not only as a child of such a parent, but also as a parent myself. This kind of parenting is far from normal. The destructive results of such parenting last years and will continue unless you stop it.

If you have this problem, I highly recommend this book. Lots of the other books on the subject are by psychotherapists and are filled with tons of written exercises and case studies. These books might be useful if you're a psychotherapist yourself. They might be useful if you enjoy doing writtent exercises. But if you want to fix your own personal problem, get this book. You won't find better advice than from someone who has been there, experienced the problem, and fixed it.

Prof. Goodman's Rock Mechanics

As a Ph.D student of Geotechnical Engineering at UC Berkeley, I recommend Prof. Goodman's "Introduction to Rock Mechanics". This book has been, and always is the kind of can't-afford-without reference book for every Engineer and Scientist in the field of Rock Engineering and Enginnering Geology.
This book treats many aspects of engineering properties of rock. Block Theory is actually the highlight of this book. By projecting 3D block pyramids into 2-D steronet, the stability of slope cut comprised of jointed rock blocks becomes quite evident, and the analysis method is straight-forward and can performed by hand. Key blocks (removable blocks) could be identified and so does the corresponding bolting forces and so on. As put in the comments of Prof. Goodman's 35th Rankine Lecture (1995), Block Theory initiated by Prof. Goodman and Dr. Shi here at Berkeley really makes the once impossible 3D rock slope problem completely POSSIBLE. Block Theory maybe one of the most elegant theories of this kind in Rock Engineering, and this book will give you the best introductory insight you could expect.
Kowning Prof. Goodman personally very well, I could say that he is really a "good man" , actually, one of the most distinguished figures in acadamics. His talent in both academics and musics makes this book very easy to read. Thus I strongly recommend this book to you, and hope to share with you the exciting world of ROCK.

Columbo is, of course, the fictional Los Angeles police detective created 50 years ago by Link and his writing partner, the late Richard Levinson, and famously played on television by Peter Falk. Here, Link offers a dozen original short stories about the character. All the ingredients are here: the crime, the murderer, Columbo’s step-by-step assembling of the evidence. The solutions to the cases, as fans will expect, often hinge on one crucial piece of evidence or on gleaning the truth from seemingly insignificant observations. The author incorporates many of Columbo’s familiar traits (the raincoat, the cigar, the catchphrases), but these are not pastiches. The book’s only real flaw—and this may only be a flaw to rabid fans of the TV show—is that the stories feel rushed; there’s not enough of the signature Columbo meandering, befuddling his suspects with his seemingly slow-witted questioning. These are good stories, and it’s great to see Columbo again, but they leave us feeling as if we’ve had a snack when we wanted a full-course meal. --David Pitt

About the Author
WILLIAM LINK was born in Philadelphia and grew up in a neighboring suburb. At four years old, he began drawing stories before he had learned to write. Then pencil in hand he drew his own comic books with his own super heroes. Much later, incongruously, he received his degree from the Wharton School of Business where, for his senior thesis, he submitted three original TV scripts, which he later sold. And then along came Hollywood. With his childhood best friend and collaborator, Richard Levinson, they became legends in their own time. Link and Levinson created fourteen on-the-air TV series including Columbo, Murder She Wrote, Mannix, McCloud, Ellery Queen, The Bold Ones, as well as the Broadway musical, Merlin, motion pictures, stage plays and books. After Levinson's untimely death in 1987, Link co-created two more television series, Probe and The Cosby Mysteries, wrote plays, short stories, and was president of the Mystery Writers of America. As Link said, a business education was a safety net if he and Levinson failed in a writing career. They never did and millions of television viewers have been enriched by their success.

The Return of Columbo

A fine group of short stories by one of the creators of the famous show. Peter Falk is unfortunately suffering from Alzheimer's I believe(best wishes to him and his family). These tales are a good way to remember him and the marvelous character he fleshed out on the many episodes.

Not really mysteries, the show never was, it's really about Columbo matching wits with criminals who usually mistake his little mannerisms for stupidity. There's even one story where the murderer, a cop, says, "I know all your little tricks!"

It does him no good.

the fun here is watching Columbo slowly manuever these killers until there's no where they can bluff their way out.

Worth a look.

Just One More Thing....

This is an above average collection of mystery stories featuring the greatest tv dectective of them all. Twelve stories in all, unless you purchase the hardback copy (and its worth it, got mine today) which features a pamplet with a thirteenth Columbo story, "Columbo's Mistake." Some reviews of this book have lamented the brevity of the stories, but remember these are "short stories." And while i too would like for some of the stories to be longer and more detailed their brevity does not detract from the over all quality of the book. Anyone of these stories could be fleshed out into a full length Columbo movie, and the book is a fine addition to the Columbo cannon. Stories included in the book are:

1) The Criminal Criminal Attorney, in which a lawyer becomes judge jury and executioner.

2) Grief (one of my favorites) In whcih the presence of a doggie bowl and the lack of a dog start Columbo to thinking

3) A Dish Best Served Cold, (another favorite) in which the lack of finger prints on a bottle of scotch point to a killer

4) Richochet, in which a would be Presidential assasin is himself assasinated, and Columbo must over come his fear of flying.

5) Scout's Honor, in which a potential father in law proves deadly, and a troop of scouts helps Columbo uncover important evidence of murder.

6) Sucker Punch (another favorite), In which an ex-champion welterweight boxer may have a strong motive for murder.

7) The Blackest Mail, in which a young actresses' past returns to haunt her.

8) The Gun that Wasn't, in which a cop killer uses the postal service to despose of the murder weapon.

9) Requiem for a Hitman, in which a woman contacts a hitman to murder her husband, and then murders him.

10) Trance, In which Comumbo's niece inadvertianly helps solve a murder.

11) Murder Allegro, (another good one) in which a key left in a shoe helps identify a murderer.

12) Photo Finish, in which, "Hell hath no fury like those infernal traffic camera's!"

13) Columbo's Mistake........hardcover copy ony, in which a man wrongly convicted of murder, murders the man he has suppost to have already killed.

Just not the same

I am a diehard Columbo fan and I was extremely excited to learn about this book of columbo short stories was coming out. Perhaps I expected too much, especially from short stories but I am extremely disappointed with these set of stories. I do believe that the biggest problem is that the stories are too short to get the real feel of what I'm so used to...a 1 1/2- 2 hour TV movie. The short stories do not always follow the same format...get to know the killer, discover his motive, watch the murder actually take place, watch as Columbo slowly discovers the clues he needs to convict the killer, see his expressions, particularly the wonderful "look" he gives when he knows who did it. These stories just don't have the Columbo 'feel' to them. For the most part, reading these stories is very much like reading any old murder mystery short story that I have from my old Alfred Hitchcock books. Columbo in the stories just doesn't sound like Columbo. As of this writing I have only two more stories to read and I'm not excited to read them. What should have taken me one or two days to read because of my anticipation has dragged out to weeks because I am just not motivated much to read the stories. As an avid fan of Columbo I would say that if you are just a fan of the columbo movies, just stick to them. If you are a huge fan like me and feel like you need anything that comes along about Columbo, then you might as well purchase this book but don't be surprised if you're disappointed as I am. Perhaps you can hold off and get a used copy for a cheaper price. I now wish I had.

�Un verdadero "Page-Turner"!

Cuando adquir� este libro, jam�s pens� que ser�a tan bueno. Todo, absolutamente todo, est� integrado de forma impecable. Los personajes, la trama, los giros, el cl�max, las escenas, el estilo... Fue una tremenda experiencia leerlo. Para ser sincero, al principio me choc� un poco el t�tulo. Pero cuando por fin comprend� qu� significa, considero que fue perfecto llamarlo as�: Matando Elefantes.

No he parado de recomendar esta novela, que fue lo que me hizo escribir esta rese�a.

Y para el que pidi� la lista de mnemot�cnica, aqu� ponga una, utilizando la misma tabla que Harvey nombra en la
primera Carpeta de Ideas.

L�anlo!

Lo mejor de este libro es lo real que queda mostrado todo aquello que nos estanca en la vida. Es la imagen t�pica: la familia que quiere un buen futuro para su hijo, el hijo que entra a la universidad a estudiar algo que no le gusta, la frustraci�n que se experimenta durante el proceso. El estancamiento que esto nos provoca... Hasta que entra el personaje de Harvey en la historia.
Este Harvey es otra cosa. Tienes unas ideas y unos m�todos extra�os, es un cre�do, pero sabe lo que hace. Y ese es el tipo el que pone a pensar al protagonista (y a nosotros). El resto de la novela es todo el proceso y las cosas que terminan haciendo para dejar de ser dos tipos comunes y convertirse en gente de poder y dinero.
Vale la pena leerla. Te pone a pensar mucho.

Y hasta me he pasado largas en internet buscando varios de los t�rminos y m�todos que se mencionan en la novela, como los trucos de nemot�cnica, estrategias de seducci�n, consejos para escritores y sobre el concepto de quemar las naves. — Es una historia adictiva. Los cap�tulos son cortos y siempre terminan con un gancho que te obligan a comenzar el pr�ximo. Es un libro poco largo, por lo que no se puede leer de una tirada, pero tiene la ventaja de que dura. Est� muy interesante, en especial el personaje de Harvey.

LEE N. VANDEN HEUVEL is Manager of Incident Investigation/Root Cause Analysis Services and the Manager of Training Services for ABS Consulting, with 23+ years of experience in plant operations and analysis. He has assisted organizations in many different industries with the development and implementation of incident investigation and root cause analysis (RCA) programs. He has also led and participated in investigations in many types of industries, including chemical, refining, healthcare, manufacturing, drilling, machining, pharmaceuticals, waste disposal, nuclear power, and food processing. Mr. Vanden Heuvel was previously the project manager and lead analyst for a large quantitative risk assessment program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He also worked for 8 years at a nuclear power plant in operations, engineering support, and training. His current responsibilities are in the areas of RCAs, incident investigations, human factors, procedures, safety analyses, and economic/decision analyses. DONALD K. LORENZO is the Director of Training Services for ABS Consulting. He has 28+ years of experience in hazard analysis and risk assessment. He was previously a development engineer for Union Carbide Corporation. Mr. Lorenzo specializes in safety and environmental applications of ABS Consulting s SOURCE methodology. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee and a Certified Technical Trainer. WALTER E. HANSON is a Project Manager and Risk/Reliability Engineer for ABS Consulting. Root Cause Analysis Handbook

This is, without a doubt, the best book I have seen on problem solving. Not only does the book guide you through the process, it also provides a root cause map you can use to navigate through any problem. I have yet to encounter a problem it does not cover. It is specific enough to guide you to a true root cause and also general enough to use in any business. The support material is first rate. I use this book for quality problems and find it highly effective in helping supervisors and managers work through problems identify true root causes.

A valuable book

The Root Cause Analysis Handbook is in a league of its own for content. The detail found in this book is a rare treat and I must say this has gone to the top of my books in Problem Management. This book is not specific to IT, however this is where I will be using it. Those knowledgable in ITIL will have no difficulty in applying the information in this book. I will be looking for any other books they publish.

Don't buy the kindle version if you want the additional resources

I purchased this book, having been enticed by the additional benefits to be received upon registering the book. However to my chagrin , while registering the book (i purchased the kindle version) I discovered that the registration process required access to a physical copy of the book due to the nature of the questions. E.g. what is found on a certain page on a certain line etc. Given that kindle uses locations and not pages as well as the fact that the orientation of the book impacts on what information is shown in each location, I soon discovered that my deciding factor no longer existed and felt somewhat cheated. While I am sure that sending an email or talking to customer service may have cleared that obstacle I found that the prospect of awaiting a reply which may come anytime between now and next year daunting.
