Be terrified.
It's you I love,
perfect man,
Greek God, my own;
but I know you'll go,
betray me, stray
from home.
So better by far for
me if you were stone.
--from "Medusa"

Stunningly original and haunting, the voices of Mrs. Midas, Queen Kong, and Frau Freud, to say nothing of the Devil's Wife herself, startle us with their wit, imagination, and incisiveness in this collection of poems written from the perspectives of the wives, sisters, or girlfris of famous -- and infamous -- male personages. Carol Ann Duffy is a master at drawing on myth and history, then subverting them in a vivid and surprising way to create poems that have the pull of the past and the crack of the contemporary.

From Publishers Weekly
The voices of Mrs. Tiresias, Mrs. Faust, Mrs. Quasimodo and other wives wittily recast myth and history from a woman's point of view in the pages of Manchester-based Duffy's fifth collection. Self-contained Penelope is not waiting for her Odysseus; frustrated Mrs. Sisyphus is married to a workaholic; Pygmalion's statue, tired of being pestered by her groping suitor, "changed tack/ grew warm, like candle wax/ kissed back"--and after sex gets dumped. But while Duffy's revisionist dramatic monologues are rife with clever twists, this material has been well mined by such poets as Alta, Margaret Atwood and Alicia Ostriker. Even references to Viagra, sheep-cloning and Monica Lewinsky seem an updating of Transformations (1971), Anne Sexton's deadpan fairy tales studded with cultural references, with the poems trapped in a similarly polarized conception of gender relations. Thus Thetis is brutalized in a new way each time she changes form--man is cross-bow to her albatross, charmer to her snake, fisherman to her mermaid--and to Queen Herod, the Christ child is simply a threat to her infant girl: he's "The Wolf. The Rip. The Rake. The Rat./The Heartbreaker. The Ladykiller. Mr. Right." The luckiest in love is Mrs. Beast, married to a devoted creature that's hung like a mule, and just as hardworking: "And if his snot and trotters fouled/ my damask sheets, why, then, he'd wash them. Twice." The flippant tone elicits chuckles, but one imagines these characters would've come a longer way by now, baby. (Apr.) FYI: Duffy's anthology Time's Tidings: Greeting the 21st Century includes 50 contemporary poets, each of whom is represented by a poem of his or her own on "time," and by a favorite poem on the same subject. From The New Yorker
" . . . The élan of this volume sets it apart, the characters (and poems) triumphant."

From Booklist
Duffy's dramatic monologues expressing the perspectives of famous men's wives resemble the potato chips in the old ad campaign, for it is hard to read just one. "Mrs. Aesop" tells us what an excruciating bore the old moralist was. "Mrs. Sisyphus" bitterly complains about her hubby's job. "Frau Freud" reveals no penis envy at all. Yet, not all these wives' tales are funny. "Mrs. Lazarus" is as horrified as he by his resurrection. "Circe," after the disappointing experience with Odysseus, says she has lost her appetite for men, but not for "sizzling pig." "Mrs. Midas" yearns for his touch again, even as she rues marrying such a thoughtless, greedy man. And then there is the startling allegory of the power of poetry that Duffy makes out of "Little Red-Cap" (aka Little Red Riding Hood). Although intentionally more humorous than Anne Sexton's fairy tale retellings or Ann Stanford's re-envisionings of Greek myths, Duffy's takes on the stuff of legends are as richly rewarding as those much-admired poems. I really liked this book by Duffy
By Kali Contillo
I really liked this book by Duffy. She essentially takes tons of popular stories featuring a male lead/perspective and she tells the tale from a woman's perspective, most often the wife, in a poem structure. There is humor, there is suspense, there is sadness. It's a great collection of poems. I used this book in one of my college courses and I ended up really liking the whole book. It's a slim book so it's not too heavy and it's not too little either. I would definitely recommend this book.

New voices
By Erin J. Kiley
In "The World's Wife," Duffy deftly reworks tales from myths, fables, the bible, popular culture, literature and history. Some popular stories are reexamined through the eyes of a female witness, as with "Pilate's Wife," "Mrs. Darwin, " "Mrs. Sisyphus" and "Anne Hathaway." Others are modernized; In "Mrs. Faust," Faust and his wife are a pair of yuppies collecting degrees, computers and cell phones. A few stories, like "Queen Kong", are reimagined with a female protagonist replacing the male. The poetry is as diverse as the personae, with voices ranging from lingering, dreamy and dramatic to hard, clipped and succinct.

The World's Wife lets previously unheard women speak. Their voices are not always what readers expect from a lyric speaker, for how often is deep emotion examined through rhyming slang for tits, or the nicknames for a penis? Yet when Duffy calls a modern wife frustrated by her husband's discovery of Viagra "Mrs. Rip Van Winkle," or a contemporary-voiced woman whose husband works mindlessly and ceaselessly "Mrs. Sisyphus," Duffy reveals that their personal struggles are not theirs alone. Their troubles have resonance, and echo through history, literature and myth---even though in the past it may have been left unspoken.

The Witch-Hunt in Early Modern Europe, by Brian P. Levack

Between 1450 and 1750 thousands of people, most of them women, were accused, prosecuted and executed for the crime of witchcraft. The witch-hunt was not a single event; it comprised thousands of individual prosecutions, each shaped by the religious and social dimensions of the particular area as well as political and legal factors. Brian Levack sorts through the proliferation of theories to provide a coherent introduction to the subject, as well as contributing to the scholarly debate. The book:

  • Examines why witchcraft prosecutions took place, how many trials and victims there were, and why witch-hunting eventually came to an end.
  • Explores the beliefs of both educated and illiterate people regarding witchcraft.
  • Uses regional and local studies to give a more detailed analysis of the chronological and geographical distribution of witch-trials.
  • Emphasises the legal context of witchcraft prosecutions.
  • Illuminates the social, economic and political history of early modern Europe, and in particular the position of women within it.

In this fully updated third edition of his exceptional study, Levack incorporates the vast amount of literature that has emerged since the last edition. He substantially extends his consideration of the decline of the witch-hunt and goes further in his exploration of witch-hunting after the trials, especially in contemporary Africa. New illustrations vividly depict beliefs about witchcraft in early modern Europe.

From the Back Cover

Fearlessly, Brian Levack tackles a vast, complex subject and reduces it to a concise and lucid synthesis with consummate skill, challenging old assumptions and casting light into the darkest corners. …the essential starting point for the study of early modern witch-beliefs and witchcraft trials.

Now, at last, with Brian Levack’s careful scholarly and critical survey, a thoroughly reliable introduction to the whole literature is available.

Best Summary of Modern Research
By Jennifer Gibbons
During the 70's and 80's, a flood of new information on historical witchcraft became available. Levack's book is the best survey of this new data, which has revolutionized our understanding of the Great Hunt. It's not a very "daring" book; it sticks to the facts, to the things we're sure about. There isn't a lot of speculation in it. But it's a great antidote to the badly researched books, like Anne Barstow's _Witchcraze_, which flood the popular market.

Evidence based and thoughtful for a mainstream book on the topic
By Michael Bates
Finally, a scholarly treatment of the issue unimpeded by an emotional attachment to the forgery Etienne Leon de Lamothe-Langon's Histoire de l'Inquisition en France, written in 1829 (even though the forgery was uncovered in 1975)or any strong desire to hammer a square peg into a round hole to promulgate a writer's own personal crusade.

The result is an evidence based and thoughtful historical treatment of the Witch Hunting tragedy with reasonable conclusions.

If you are sick of unrealistic oversimplifications that reflect the pet interest/s of the author more than the historical evidence or sick of books where the author has not taken the time to keep 'up to date' with historical developments (35 years ago) and believes that the Witch Hunt is a purely medieval phenomenon rather than peaking between 1550 and 1650 this is the book to read.

Given the strengths of the book I would recommend it to anyone from budding historians to general public with an interest in a historically accurate take on the Witch Hunts. I acknowledge that Catholics might find slight discomfort in the author's apparent prejudice against Catholicism. He writes of reformation greats being Luther and Calvin and seems to downplay their contribution by contextualising that they didn't make much direct comment on the topic even though one of them insisted that witches need to be killed or something and they were highly influential. That is not to say that he fails to acknowledge that they contributed just a slight reluctance to give their contribution as much weight as someone who doesn't consider reformists to be great might. This is a very subtle issue that does not significantly detract from this first rate book.

Informative, but rather repetitive and dry
By Danton M.
Pulling together the vast amount of information that Levack does had to be a truly daunting task. He does it well, with easily followed organization and summaries, tables and charts, and copious references to specific witch-hunt episodes. This all makes it a good reference for people who might want to know more about the social and religious settings of the hunts. (I'm reading it for a graduate literature class on mythology and heresy.)
However, he refers to specific hunts as if expecting readers to know a good deal about their causes, effects and events. Except for the Salem, MA, hunt (which is frequently referenced, though technically not in Europe at all), none of the many hunts were at all familiar to me. What, for instance, WAS the 1610-1611 "dream epidemic" in Basque country? It sounds fascinating, but Levack never gives us any details about it. Perhaps this sort of information is beyond the scope of Levack's interest, but its omission does make for dry reading of numbers and dates, as opposed to the more human stories that lie behind them.

A New Year's Eve Carol of Sorts...
By NotATameLion
Modern readers of Dicken's A Christmas Carol are often inoculated to what a shocking piece of literature it was in its day. Familiarity has softened its blow to the public at large. This is not so with The Chimes.
The Chimes is the second of Dickens's "Christmas Books." Written in 1844 it came a year after A Christmas Carol and a year before The Cricket on the Hearth. Not nearly as widely read as either its predecessor or its successor, The Chimes probably packs more of an emotional wallop than either story.
Set on a New Year's Eve rather than on Christmas proper, The Chimes is a story about self-respect and the consequences of our choices. The main character, Trotty Veck is an inverse of sorts to A Christmas Carol's Ebeneezer Scrooge. He is poor and thinks so little of himself that he threatens to destroy himself and his family. Only through supernatural intervention can things hope to be set right.
I first listened to this recording of The Chimes on last New Year's Eve. First of all, this recording is unabridged (even though it is currently listed as abridged.) Secondly, this particular recording is a wonderful reading of The Chimes. One could not ask for more.
The Chimes is a tale that will--as the best of Dickensian melodrama does--grip you and wring your heart. One really gets the sense of what reading Dickens must have felt like to his contemporaries.
This is powerful stuff. Give it a try.

Fun follow up to Christmas Carol. More thoughtful insights into human nature.
By Chris
Following Dickens's success with A Christmas Carol he started a tradition of releasing a new story each year at Christmas time. His second Christmas story was The Chimes. The book follows an old porter/messenger in London named Trotty Veck. As with Christmas Carol and many of his other works, Dickens has plenty of focus on the social structure of the country. Trotty is a very poor old widower with a single daughter, Meg. At the onset of the book, Meg brings Trotty lunch and announces that she plans to get married within the week on New Year's Day. At first Trotty is a little nervous but generally happy for his daughter. As the day goes on, Trotty becomes less sure of whether or not they should marry or even if any of them deserve to be happy.

In Christmas Carol and other books, Dickens takes opportunities to have his characters give social commentary. In The Chimes this comes initially from some of the rich society members of the town as they give messages for Trotty to carry. The first commentary is in direct reaction to the announcement of Meg's wedding plans. Alderman Cute speaks with biting reproach against the lower class in general and Trotty, Meg and her fiance in particular. He talks of the "good old days" and eventually concludes that the poor have no real rights or privileges. In essence, they should be done away with entirely and certainly have no right to marry and carry on their wretched existence by propagating more poor creature.

Trotty carries a message from the Alderman to a member of Parliament. In that house Trotty is berated by a commentary on economic stability and responsibility. He is chastised for being poor and owing a few shillings to a local shop where he buys food. Trotty leaves feeling even more disgraced. On his way home he meets another vagrant, William Fern, and his niece Lillian. Trotty knows William is slated to be arrested by the Alderman. Rather than let him be arrested, Trotty warns Fern and takes him to his own poor home with Meg.

The title of the story is based on the Chimes that ring over the city from the church tower near where Trotty stands to await messages to deliver. After taking the Ferns to his home, Trotty gets pensive again and worries about the burden he's putting on society and wonders about the truth of whether it is better that he and his kind were removed from existence. During the night, the Chimes ring and Trotty can hear them speaking to him, calling to him. He follows them up into the church bell tower and encounters a company of goblins and spirits.

One of the spirits takes the form of Lillian, the niece of William Fern. The spirit takes Trotty on a journey similar to that of Ebenezer Scrooge though rather than showing his past, Trotty is taken throughout the future of London. He sees the hole he leaves with his death. He sees the misery and pain of the poor around him. He sees the hypocritical behavior of the higher classes of society. He sees the pain and suffering of his own daughter and her eventual loss of all hope as she plummets into complete despair. In a scene reminiscent of Christmas Carol, we find Trotty begging the spirit to let him help Meg. He begs to be given another chance. He promises that he has learned the truth of life and knows now that the poor and feeble classes do have a right to existence. Better yet, they have a right to be happy and have hope and joy of better days to come.

I found The Chimes to be less compelling than A Christmas Carol. I think part of that comes due to the lengthy sermons from Alderman Cute, Joseph Bowley (the member of Parliament) and others. While these narrations were interesting at a level they were also very steeped in political and social language of the times. Because I am not super familiar with the details of Victorian social woes there were plenty of allusions and references that just blew by me without the impact that they surely had on readers in Dickens's day. Even though I was bogged down by some of the very specific details, I was touched, shocked and appawled by the nature of the discussions. Especially knowing that these conversations and speeches were based in reality I found myself disgusted at the behavior of these individuals.

I really liked the "spirit voyage" that Trotty goes on and found it very compelling. It had scenes similar to A Christmas Carol where Trotty sees the poverty and vagrancy in which people live but he also gets to see that they are capable of joy and happiness in spite of their enormous lack of sustenance. More than these expected scenes, I really liked the counterpoint scenes of the upper class members of society. I found it interesting to see their hypocrisy and the paradox that in some cases they weren't nearly as happy as those who had nothing.

Doing a little bit of research, it sounds like The Chimes enjoyed great success upon release and had a wonderful reception. In reading the book I had thought that some of Dickens's satirical social commentary might have come a little too close to the mark and earned him reproof from those in government or business but it doesn't sound like there was too much of that. Instead it seems like this well received novel may have fufilled some of Dickens's hope that he could help bring more people to the knowledge of the plight and horrible situation of the poor.

Personally I didn't enjoy the story as much as A christmas Carol so Chimes certainly won't a replacement for me as a new classic Christmas story. Still, I felt like the writing, characters and themes were very well presented and I think this is an excellent story well worth reading if only to provide additional subject matter to think on when considering the themes presented in A Christmas Carol. All in all, a solid piece of work.

Use Our Time Wisely
By Fan of Time-Life Books
The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells That Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In is one of five Christmas books written in the 1840s by English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Set on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, it tells the story of Trotty Veck who witnesses visions presented by goblins residing in the bell tower of a church. The moral I took from this story (and many of Dickens' stories can be classified as morality tales) is that time is given to us for our advancement and improvement. Rather than focusing on the past we need to use the present to improve the human condition. I found this story to be somewhat similar to Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but not as good as the latter. Nevertheless, The Chimes is a good story with a pertinent message.

Marvellous Ways is eighty-nine years old and has lived alone in a remote Cornish creek for nearly all her life. Lately she's taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She's waiting for something - she's not sure what, but she'll know it when she sees it.

Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the Second World War. When his promise to fulfil a dying man's last wish sees him wash up in Marvellous' creek, broken in body and spirit, the old woman comes to his aid.

A Year of Marvellous Ways is a glorious, life-affirming story about the magic in everyday life and the pull of the sea, the healing powers of storytelling and sloe gin, love and death and how we carry on when grief comes snapping at our heels.

I was attracted to this book straight away by it's beautiful cover, it really is lovely and it doesn't stop there, what's inside is even lovelier.

A Year of Marvellous Way's is actually about a wonderful lady who is actually called Marvellous Ways. It's 1947 and Marvellous reminded me very much of a gypsy woman, living in her caravan with people coming to her for help with potions to help with all sorts of ailments and problems. Through this wonderfully told story we find out more about who Marvellous really is and her colourful past.

We meet a wonderful array of characters through this story like Francis 'Freddy" Drake and Peace, who bakes bread but the taste of her bread is determined by her moods and feelings.

I can see this book not being to everyone's tastes as it is very quirky but I think if readers give it a chance I think by the end of the story they will have fallen ever so slightly for the wonderfully different Marvellous Ways.

My favourite character had to be Marvellous, she fascinated me and I couldn't wait to turn each page to learn more about who she is and what had happened to her in her past. I thought the ending was very fitting to the story and left me feeling a mixture of happiness and sadness.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more by her.

Many thanks too Bookbridgr and Headline Book Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Very special
By Suze Lavender
Marvellous Ways is a special lady. She's eighty-nine years old and she's living by herself in a creek. She's lived and loved, but didn't get the chance to grow old with the person she wanted to be with the most. When Drake joins her after a traumatic ending of his stay in London she knows he needs a place to stay. He was a soldier in the Second World War and he's fulfilling a dying soldier's wish to deliver a letter. They weren't friends, but he still travels a long way to keep this promise.

Marvellous Ways has plenty of stories to tell. She has an unusual background and is a remarkable woman. Drake needs a place to heal and he's happy with the old woman's company. He makes her remember and he helps her with little jobs here and there. Soon they aren't alone any longer, because finally people are coming back to the once deserted area. Marvellous Ways leads a simple and secluded life near her beloved sea. She lives with her joys and also with her grief. Drake has a mission to fulfill, but he also needs to find the truth about himself. They are perfect company for one another...

A Year of Marvellous Ways is such a beautiful and unusual story. It brought tears to my eyes many times. It's a book I want to frame, because it's a real work of art. It's a story to savor, to enjoy slowly and to love deeply. I loved the dreamlike quality of the words, the brilliant prose and the remarkable woman called Marvellous Ways. I couldn't get enough of this book, I wanted it to keep going, because the words are all meaningful and so skillfully written. I highly recommend this fantastic novel. It's such a special book, one I will always cherish. It's a story I want to reread over and over again, to get reacquainted with old friends and to discover something new as I'm very sure that will happen every time I will read this book. It's a story that moves, that makes you wonder and that will make you think, even long after you've finished reading that last sentence.

Beautiful Book
By K. Bissell
This is am amazing book. Almost magical realist. Although magical realism is technically supposed to be broken up by the mundane and nothing in this story is mundane. It's about people learning about themselves. It's beautiful, dark, but also optimistic. The moment I finished it, I wanted to give it to my mentor. She loved it as well. I am very particular about writing styles and mostly enjoy reading authors who are wordsmiths (Nicole Krauss, Jonathan Safran Foer, Chris Cleave). Sarah Winman's style is definitely up there.

The Newer, More English Version, by Tom Carver

The Newer, More English Version is about the most refreshing thing to happen to the Science vs. Religion debate since The Life Of Brian, and whilst it probably won't change anyone's mind about the merits of either side, it does make the whole encounter a lot more fun than most of the other stuff that has been written on the subject in recent memory.

The book is not so much a serious attempt to explain how everything could have happened without God - which would be obviously redundant - a comic take on what the first five books of the Bible look like from an atheist's perspective. Some of the jokes are really very good, although it's probably worth saying that if you're going to get them all it helps to have a working knowledge of the Old Testament (or at least a copy handy).

There is more to this book than just the humour, though. Once you've taken the whole God thing out of the story, the character and motivation of leading figures of the Old Testament become fun things to speculate about, and it's this focus on character that stoops the Newer, More English Version from being just another loo book, and makes you want to read the whole thing.

"A smart, fascinating, poetic, hypnotic and sometimes very funny read..." Danny Wallace, British novelist, film and radio producer

Clever and thought-provoking.--

Professor Steven Pinker, Harvard College Professor and author

From the Back Cover
In the beginning was the word, and... ...you know the rest. Not like this you don't. In a new twist on a classic tale, Tom Carver re-imagines the Old Testament without the leading character. The Newer, More English Version takes an erudite look at the supporting players of the Pentateuch, with no Jehovah to steal the show. What's left is a varied cast of egomaniacs, revolutionaries, war criminals, genii and perverts: Joseph, smug careerist and part-time psychoanalyst; Moses, a revolutionary firebrand who just wants to belong; Abraham, the world's first and greatest global branding strategist; and one very strange tree...

About the Author
Tom is interested in the grey area lying between treating the bible as truth and treating the bible as fairy tales.

good book, got the stufff you need
By Gary P
I like this book a lot. We used it for our "vehicle performance" class. Its got chapters on things like takeoff distance and range of an airplane, also got stuff on efficiencies of jet versus propellor engines and so on. Basically it is all about 'aircraft performance' as the name states. My professor arranged the course in the same order as the book so it was easy reference and had what we were required to learn. It has also come in handy for my aircraft design senior level courses.
