About the Author
Andrew Whittington is an entomologist specialised in the identification and naming of insects, most particularly, but not exclusively, dealing with flies (Diptera). He has more than a dozen years' experience as a fly taxonomist, has written approximately 50 scientific papers and described and named more than 60 new species. Andrew has collected extensively in the field, in countries as widespread as Finland, Germany, Hungary, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Scotland, South Africa, Swaziland and Switzerland. During the course of research, he has examined thousands of specimens from all over the world, mainly in the orders (in decreasing magnitude) Diptera, Coleoptera, Neuroptera, Plecoptera, Odonata, Hemiptera, Mecoptera and Hymenoptera. The breadth of knowledge obtained during this broad range of research has been applied previously to forensic, medical, public health and environmental work in South Africa. Andrew is an instructor for online distance learning with global forensic education.

Tibet and especially Lhasa, its capital city, is guarded from outsiders by fanatic natives, and the country is further guarded by the giant mountain ranges that hem it in. No white man before Dr. McGovern ever got through the icebound Himalayan passes in the winter, and no white man before him ever contrived to live in Lhasa long enough to photograph and study the Tibetans at close range. A party made up to go to Tibet, of which Dr. McGovern was one, was stopped at Syangtse and told to go back. All the rest of the party turned in their tracks and dropped down into India. Dr. McGovern, accompanied only by his servant Satan, continued in disguise into Tibet, arriving ultimately after a series of almost incredible hardships in Lhasa itself. He interviewed the Dalai Lama and other officials and functionaries, studied the people and took innumerable photographs. An amazing tale sure to enthrall the reader.

Virtual Visit to Tibet

This book is the story of an incredible journey into Tibet when foreign travel was not permitted and before the Chinese totally brutalized the country. It is a travel log, but the scenes set and the images presented will remain long past the reading of the book. For instance, the description of the Himalayas once the author was on the other side, or the pink salt at the mountain lakes, or how you can stand in shadow and sun and receive frostbite on one leg and sunburn on the other, and many more scenes of this kind. The capstone of the story was his arrival into Lhasa, the description of the city, and meeting the Dhalia Lama.

Fantastic Adventure Travel from the great age of explorers.

This is the true story of the first westerner to enter inner Tibet with the exception of a military expedition. McGovern, turned back at the border, dyes his skin and puts lemon drops in his blue eyes to disguise himself as a porter. Discovered in Lhasa, threatened with execution, he is befriended by the Dalai Lhama. McGovern speaks Tibetan, is a student of Budhism (in fact had been a Buddhist monk), and casts a unique eye on another world. A world that, by the time of Heinrich Harrar, had already changed dramatically.

D. Stanley Eitzen (Ph. D., University of Kansas) is professor emeritus of sociology at Colorado State University, where he taught for twenty-one years, the last as John N. There are some interesting points, but the book comes off as being a little too libral and making points and showing the facts that it wants. There were facts left out that intelligent readers should know were omitted that contradict certain findings.
Sometimes the percentages and straight numbers were overkill to read.
There were some very good and interesting points taken from other countries with solutions that were innovative, although the book seemed to determine that these were the 'correct' solutions and failed to factor in major differences in the societies and legal factors.
There were good points and interesting reads, but the half-truths and seemingly purposely omitted information seemed to look for an uncrittical audience to persuade the reader to the left. I feel that addressing the information that was not presented would have made the book more neutral and seem less bias.

Nothing new, save your money

I found this book intensely irritating. It's 160 pages long and most of that is filler, pretty photos, pages with three short paragraphs spaced well apart. The actual content could easily be included in a book of half the length and without that infuriating spiral binder (way too big and bulky). It's basically very expensive for what it is.

The content is ridiculously optimistic. Apparently you can sort out your clothes closet in two hours flat. If that were really the case, nobody would ever have a messy closet. My clothes closet is not very big and is organized and tidy, but I still need at least one day to sort it out twice a year, because you have to try things on to see how they look when deciding whether to keep or toss.

Some of the advice is so ludicrous, it had me howling with laughter. Apparently you can have a really tiny handbag because you only need to carry seven essentials (wallet, calendar or electronic organizer, notebook, pen, comb, tissue and keys). I only ever buy small handbags and I travel light, but I do not view my asthma inhaler, cell phone or sunglasses as frivolities. Many women would be horrified at the thought of not carrying any make up whatsoever!

If you've read any other decluttering book, you don't need this one.

This book is TERRIFIC! Not only is it well laid out (pictures, tabs, everything that makes this book)the information contained in it is good, makes sense, and easy to follow! I also got the Home Organizing Book from the same author. Great book as well. It motivates you to get off your behind and get your life in order. GET THIS BOOK.

This is a must read for anyone interested in real estate development, urban design, architecture, sustainability, community planning, politics and or any aspect of the built environment. These ten plants, achira (Canna edulis), ahipa (Pachyrhizus ahipa), arracacha (Aracacia xanthorrhiza), maca (Lepidium meyenii), mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum), mauka (Mirabilis expansa), oca (Oxalis tuberosa), potato (Solanum spp.), ulluco (Ullucus tuberosus), and yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius), are diverse in form, color, and flavor and include some of the most beautiful vegetables ever to grace a plate. While potato may seem like an odd inclusion, instructions are provided for growing potatoes from true potato seed (TPS), a new experience for most vegetable gardeners, but one that is growing in popularity.

The second half of the book discusses some orphan crops from around the globe, including dahlia (Dahlia spp.), potato onion (Allium cepa var. aggregatum), root chervil (Charophyllum bulbosum), sea kale (Crambe maritima), skirret (Sium sisarum), and tuberous mints (Stachys spp.), including the Chinese artichoke or crosne.

Complete instructions are provided for growing, using, propagating, and breeding these plants. Much of this information has never been published in a form easily accessible to American gardeners before.

Not just for the Pacific Northwest - it works for Southern California too!

If you love growing unusual crops I highly recommend this book. It's really hard to find reliable growing information on the web or in print for rare or forgotten crops, and this guy really knows his stuff (I have been using his amazingly informative website as my go-to source for tubers and information for growing oca, yacon, mashua, ulluco and crosnes).

I am thrilled he has published this book - although I got it for more information on things I already grow, I found myself reading about all kinds of crops I had never heard of, but now want to try. There is a tremendous amount of detail for each crop, but it's organized so you can find the information you need quickly.

Even though the title says it's for the Pacific Northwest, his advice has enabled me to successfully grow in Southern California (coastal zone).

Clear, concise, practical, and fun.

Very good information on several novel crops that are seldom grown or available in the U.S. I grew OCA in Tennessee last year using Cultivariable information despite it not being ideal for my climate.
It was a hit at Christmas dinners and a new experience for all who tried it.

Very extensive.

I downloaded this book for FREE. I DID NOT REALY NOTICE THE TITLE BUT I WAS LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON POTATOES. I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH ALL THE INFORMATION ON TUBERS.. I ALSO LEARNED ABOUT MANY OTHER PLANTS THAT I HAVE NOT EVEN HEARD OF.very well written and very informative. Thank you again for the free book. I will always give my honest and UN BIASED REVIEW.

Strength through trials.

As the previous reviews said, the photos are stunning! The whole book has so much creative variety with the different layouts and photos. It has a great story with deep insight. The poems gave me goosebumps in a good way. She writes with so much emotion that I can really FEEL it as I read them. Very true words on how we feel when we let go of people we love.
